Zhaoqing University Delegation Visits USJ to Deepen Guangdong-Macao Higher Education Collaboration

During the meeting, the two institutions exchanged views on various cooperation topics, including launching student exchange programmes and exploring joint research opportunities.
A five-member delegation from Zhaoqing University visited the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) on the 10th of July for discussions on student exchange, faculty development, and research collaboration, exploring potential directions for future cooperation.
The delegation was led by Mr. Xie Guanhua, CCP Party Secretary of Zhaoqing University, and included Mr. Chen Qian, Director of the Party and Government Office and Director of the Publicity and United Front Work Department; Prof. Li Sainan, Director of Office of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Affairs; Mr. Wu Qing, Deputy Director of the Development Planning Department; and Prof. Ye Feihua, Vice-Dean of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, USJ was represented by Vice-Rector Dr. Teresa Loong, joined by Prof. Andre Antunes, Dean of the Institute of Science and Environment; Prof. Michael Ha, Assistant Professor of Faculty of Business and Law; Mr. Ben Lei, Head of Domestic Student Recruitment Office (DSRO); and Ms. Jenny Mok, Senior Officer of DSRO.
During the meeting, the two institutions exchanged views on various cooperation topics, including launching student exchange programmes and exploring joint research opportunities. Zhaoqing University expressed a strong interest in establishing closer academic ties with USJ, particularly in innovation and entrepreneurship education and research. They also hoped to expand student exchange and short-term study visit programs to promote interaction between faculty and students and enhance academic standards at both institutions.
Research Collaboration with Complementary Strengths
Zhaoqing University has strengths in laboratory-based and applied research, while USJ offers extensive experience in international education and interdisciplinary studies. USJ noted that this provides opportunities for complementary resource sharing. Prof. André Antunes highlighted USJ’s recent initiatives in biosciences and economics, such as hosting the Sino-Luso Conference on Blue Biotechnology and the Conference on Blue Economy with Delegation from Portuguese-Speaking Countries. He expressed hope that Zhaoqing University could participate in similar events in the future.
Looking Ahead to a Win-Win Partnership
This meeting laid a solid foundation for future collaboration between the two universities. USJ plans to promote student exchange programmes to provide more students with the opportunity to experience higher education in Mainland China. The Zhaoqing University delegation also extended an invitation for USJ’s faculty and students to visit their campus in Zhaoqing, further strengthening bilateral ties.
As Guangdong-Macao collaboration continues to deepen, the partnership between USJ and Zhaoqing University will open up broader prospects for academic and research development in both regions.
