The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao welcomed Professor Tatsuya Yamamoto, President of Seisen University in Tokyo on 16 October.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao welcomed Professor Tatsuya Yamamoto, President of Seisen University in Tokyo on October 16. The visit aimed to strengthen international academic collaboration with a shared commitment to developing global education through student mobility and cultural exchange.

Dr. Teresa Loong, Vice-Rector of USJ, extended a warm welcome to President Yamamoto, highlighting the core values that unite the two institutions. The meeting also included key USJ faculty: Prof. Carlos Caires, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities; Prof. Tânia Marques, Head of the Department of Languages and Culture; Prof. João Brochado, Head of the Department of Media, Art and Technology; and Ms. Teresinha Fok from the International Affairs Office.

Both universities, grounded in a strong Catholic foundation, share a dedication to holistic education that nurtures students intellectually, ethically, and spiritually. Dr. Loong pointed to USJ’s favorable student-to-staff ratio as a key component of this mission, enabling close mentorship and a deeply supportive learning environment.

A central focus of the discussions was the development of short-term cultural immersion programs. These initiatives are designed to break down barriers for students who may not have the Japanese language proficiency required for traditional semester-long exchanges. By removing the language prerequisite, these programs create an accessible gateway for students to experience Japanese culture firsthand, enriching their academic journeys and fostering meaningful cross-cultural dialogue.

The dialogue also explored potential graduate pathways, with a focus on opportunities for Seisen University alumni to pursue PhD programmes at USJ. This dimension of the partnership underscores a mutual dedication to lifelong learning and advanced scholarly research.

This visit lays a solid foundation for a partnership that promises to enhance academic offerings and foster cross-cultural understanding, benefiting both university communities and contributing to the global educational landscape.
