The event focused on sustainable finance trends, providing an in-depth analysis of the impact of the latest EU sustainability reporting standards on corporate operations and strategies.
The “Public Lecture on Green Finance: EU Frameworks and Asian Opportunities“, organised by the Sustainable Business Lab of the Faculty of Business and Law, University of Saint Joseph, Macao (USJ), was held on 21 November at the University’s Ilha Verde Campus. The event focused on sustainable finance trends, providing an in-depth analysis of the impact of the latest EU sustainability reporting standards on corporate operations and strategies. It also explored the current state of Macao’s green bond market, analyzing its opportunities, challenges, and solutions, and fostering in-depth dialogue on sustainable development through case studies.
The public lecture was moderated by Prof. Dr. Michael Ha of the Faculty of Business and Law, USJ. Speakers include Prof. Dr. Markus Henh from the Hochschule Mainz University of Applied Sciences and Mr. Vincent Tse, Adjunct Researcher of the Faculty of Business and Law, USJ.

Prof. Henh’s presentation, “Sustainability Reporting in Europe” highlighted the current regulatory framework for sustainability reporting in the European Union and analysed how this influences corporate practices, controlling and the strategic orientation of companies. The focus was on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability due Diligence directive (CSDDD), two key pieces of legislation introduced as part of the European Green Deal to increase the transparency, comparability and credibility of sustainable information.

In his talk, Tse outlined the development of green finance markets in Macao with special emphasis on the green bond market which has been growing rapidly in past few years. Tse examined the opportunities, difficulties, limitations, possible solutions and draw comparisons between Macao and Hong Kong, Macao and Luxembourg, and lessons to be learned. He discussed and analyzed with the participants a real-world case of a sustainability startup established by a local university.

About the Organizer – Sustainable Business Lab
Started in 2023, the Faculty of Business and Law’s Sustainable Business Series aims to promote research and awareness in businesses, such as social solutions, green finance, business sustainability and health and well-being in business. It is a series of academic activities, including public lectures, seminars, research and publications, and industry roundtables/discussions. The establishment of the Sustainable Business Lab (SBL) in 2025 further concretises the effort of the sustainable business project. Research of the SBL focuses on Business as a Social Solution. Over the years, members of the FBL and their international research collaborators have concrete publications in the areas of social entrepreneurship and sustainability. The viewpoint of businesses as social solutions has also been integrated into the faculty’s BBA and MBA programmes. The FBL has been encouraging MBA, MCD and DBA students in the pursuit of social entrepreneurship and CSR research and projects.
