Year 2 and Year 3 students from the Social Work Programme recently visited the Macau Assistive Technology Resources Centre.

Year 2 and Year 3 students from the Social Work Programme at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) visited the Macau Assistive Technology Resources Centre on 19 May to gain a deeper understanding of the Centre’s daily operation, assistive technology services, and its role within Macao community support network.

The visit aimed at providing students with an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom through direct observation and exchange with frontline service providers. Representatives of the Centre introduced its service mission, target groups, assistive technology assessment, equipment loan services, and referral procedures, enabling students to better understand how assistive resources support older adults, people with disabilities, people undergoing rehabilitation, and families in need.

Participating students shared that the visit helped them connect social work theories learned in class with real-life practice. In particular, they gained further insights into case assessment, resource referral, barrier-free support, and inter-professional collaboration. Through dialogue with frontline workers, students also developed a stronger awareness of the important role of social workers in enhancing service users’ quality of life, promoting community inclusion, and safeguarding dignity.

The accompanying teacher noted that field visits are an important component of social work education, as they help students build a broader understanding of the local social service and rehabilitation support systems, while strengthening their sensitivity to the needs of different service users. The programme will continue to provide students with opportunities for practicum learning, institutional visits, and community-based learning activities to support their professional development.

The visit enhanced students’ understanding of assistive technology services and community resources in Macao and also laid a solid foundation for their future engagement in the social work profession.
