The University of Saint Joseph (USJ)’s Doctoral School held its annual Doctoral Research Topics Exhibition on Tuesday, 4 November 2025. This public event, hosted at the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus, served as a vital platform for foundational year doctoral students to present their initial research ideas and plans to a diverse audience, including fellow students, faculty members, and several of the students’ supervisors.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Professor Adérito Fernandes-Marcos, Dean of the Doctoral School, highlighting the significance of the exhibition in fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and providing students with early opportunities for constructive feedback.
The core of the event, the “Presentation of the Doctoral Research Topics 2025”, was divided into two engaging parts, with an interlude that provided an opportunity for participants to connect further and deepen discussions sparked by the posters.
A total of 20 compelling poster presentations illustrated a great variety of subjects and interests, spanning eight distinct specialisations offered within the USJ’s Doctoral Programme: Global Studies, Religious Studies, Governmental Studies, Business and Administration, History, Information Systems, Education, and Science. The presentations also sparked lively discussions, providing a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on and refine their research questions and methodologies.
Several of the topics presented revealed potential for both global and local impact, demonstrating an early commitment to addressing pertinent contemporary challenges. Furthermore, many of these nascent projects already showcased their inherent multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary nature. This strongly resonated with and already reflected the overarching theme of the Doctoral Symposium, “Devising Multi-Inter-Transdisciplinary Research”, within which this introductory initiative was integrated.
A strong feature of the exhibition was the active participation of numerous faculty members, including the current supervisors of the presenting Doctoral students. Their presence and engagement in discussions with the students showcased the supportive and collaborative academic environment at USJ.
The event concluded with closing remarks and a final discussion. The Doctoral Research Topics Exhibition 2025 proved to be an enriching experience, laying a strong foundation for the future research endeavours of USJ’s doctoral candidates.
