On 17 December 2022, OSAA organized the USJ Cultural Experience – African Culture at Kent Wong Gallery in USJ Ilha Verde Campus. This is the first event of the USJ Cultural experience series activities, which is aimed to promote the different cultures of different countries.

As the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is an international university, we have many students from different nations, such as Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome, Principe, Cape Verde, Portugal, United States, Philippines, Korea and Vietnam. On 17 December 2022, the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) organized the USJ Cultural Experience – African Culture at Kent Wong Gallery in USJ Ilha Verde Campus.  This is the first event of the USJ Cultural experience series activities, which is aimed to promote the different cultures of different countries. During this event, the participants had the opportunity to understand the culture of different countries in Africa through fun games and delicious dishes. First, all the participants were divided into two groups to play a Kahoot! Game with questions about the geography and traditions of African countries.  In the second half of the event, the participants enjoyed several traditional dishes and drinks, namely, Caldeirada, Cachupa, Arroz de Cenoura, Cafriela and Sangria. The Caldeirada is a traditional plate from Sao Tome and Principe cuisine, and the Cafriela (with carrot rice from Sao Tome and Principe cuisine), is a traditional plate from Guinea Bissau cuisine, while the Cachupa is a traditional plate from Cape Verde cuisine.

The students were glad to spend a leisure evening with fellow classmates from different backgrounds, and it was a good platform for cultural exchange and building up their social network.

Special thanks to our students — Silvino, Patrick and Morto — for organizing the game, preparing the delicious traditional African cuisine and introducing the African culture!  The event is contributing to UN SDGs of 3, 10 and 16.
