As part of the “Assessment of Special Educational Needs” module in the Bachelor of Psychology programme, a group of students visited the Vocational Training Council (VTC) Shine Skills Centre in Hong Kong on 2 December.
The visit provided an enriching and hands-on learning experience, allowing students to observe how vocational education, adaptive assessment, and person-centred planning are applied to support young people with special educational needs (SEN). Throughout the guided tour, students explored specialised assessment rooms, including those used for fine motor, perceptual, and functional skill evaluation, as well as simulation-based training environments that mirror real workplace settings. They also visited the residential facilities, which demonstrated the Centre’s commitment to fostering independence, self-care, social participation, and holistic development.
In the afternoon, already in the IVE – Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, the class led a professional development workshop for VTC staff titled “Strengthening Teacher Self-Efficacy and Engagement in Inclusive Classrooms.” Under the supervision of the lecturer, the students designed and prepared the full contents covering topics such as inclusive instructional techniques, role understanding and collaboration and other factors that enhance teacher confidence and resilience when supporting diverse learners.
Overall, the visit and workshop strengthened academic–community ties and provided students with an impactful opportunity to deepen their understanding of inclusive education while developing essential professional skills for their future roles in psychology and SEN support.
Once again, USJ extends its heartfelt gratitude to VTC for this invaluable experience and applauds their remarkable efforts in fostering a more inclusive society. Special thanks go to Raymond Chan for being an exceptional host and ensuring a truly memorable experience.
