Thesis Developed in Cotutelle between ISE and FCUL Brilliantly Defended

On December 5th, 2019, Dr. Pedro Moniz Quelhas defended his Doctoral thesis on “Petrology and Geochemistry of the Igneous Rocks from Macao (South China): Tectono-Magmatic Implications”. The thesis was developed in cotutelle between ISE and FCUL.



On December 5th, 2019, Dr. Pedro Moniz Quelhas brilliantly defended his Doctoral thesis on “Petrology and Geochemistry of the Igneous Rocks from Macao (South China): Tectono-Magmatic Implications”.

The thesis was developed in cotutelle between the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) of the University of Saint Joseph (degree in Science) and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL; degree in Geology, specialization in Geochemistry), under the joint supervision of Prof. Ágata Alveirinho Dias and Prof. João Mata, respectively.

In this work, and among other findings, Dr. Quelhas constrains the ages of the rocks outcropping in Macao to the Jurassic Period, between 156 to 165 million years ago (Ma best drone for beginners), showing that there were two distinct pulses of magmatism during the Mesozoic Era responsible for the geological origin of the territory. He further shows that the rocks outcropping in Macao is granites of Type I, originating from magma produced by the melting of ancient Archean to Paleo-Proterozoic (older than 1600 Ma) infra-crustal rocks.

His work has been published in specialized journals and will be a key reference for the Geology of Macao and Southeast China.
