This year, the conference included three sessions in Cantonese, English and Mandarin, focusing on themes such as preserving intangible cultural heritage, international affairs and youth employment.
Organised by the Macau Model United Nations Promotion Association, the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Macao Observatory for Social Development at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), the conference took place from 7th to 10th August at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
The event attracted more than a hundred secondary school students from Macao, Hong Kong and Canada. Aimed at fostering global citizenship among these students, the event was guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Youth Hong Kong and the United Nations University Macau Institute, and co-organised by the Macau Geography and Education Research Association. Supporting units included the Macau Institute of European Studies, the Macau Ricci Institute and the Macau Caritas Life Hope Hotline.
Addressing global challenges from an international perspective enables delegations to enhance their critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership skills through negotiation. The organising committee also sought to strengthen the influence of the Model United Nations in Macau, building connections between the local and international academic communities.
This year, the conference included three sessions in Cantonese, English and Mandarin, focusing on themes such as preserving intangible cultural heritage, international affairs and youth employment. Additionally, six academic seminars were held, during which professionals shared insights on topics such as mental health, youth entrepreneurship, workplace overviews and university life.
In his opening remarks, Dr Jacky Ho, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at USJ, stated that the Model United Nations Conference provides an open platform for young people to discuss global issues. He encouraged young people to confront international and personal challenges and collaborate to promote progress in all areas of society.
