The seminar was delivered by Prof. Miranda Mak, Assistant Professor of the School of Education at USJ Macao.
The “Chinese Literacy Education and Research” (CLEAR) Project under the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DCLRE) of UJS Macao, in collaboration with the Macau Baptist College, has recently held a parent seminar, attracting over 110 parents. The seminar, delivered by Prof. Miranda Mak, Assistant Professor of the School of Education, focused on the key changes in language skills as children transition from kindergarten to primary school, providing practical strategies to help parents lay the necessary foundation in Chinese literacy for their children.
The kindergarten-to-primary transition period is crucial for children’s academic adaptation, particularly in language development. Primary school curricula place different emphasis on vocabulary acquisition, writing standards, and comprehension skills. Without proper preparation, children may face challenges due to the learning gap. The seminar highlighted the important role of parents in guiding their children through this phase, ensuring a smooth adjustment in psychological readiness, study habits, and writing skills.
