The project is expected to be the first step in several new collaborative efforts involving ISE/USJ and Qatar University.
Prof. André Antunes, Dean of the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao, has started a new collaborative research project with Qatar University. This new project is funded by QRDI Council (Qatar Research, Development and Innovation) under the Qatar Foundation through its Program Office QNRF (Qatar National Research Fund).
The project, titled “Impact of Climate Change on Primary Production in Microbial Mats and Its Relationship to Food Availability for Greater Flamingos in the Arid Coastal Regions of Qatar”, will combine efforts from experts in environmental sciences and microbiology in both universities. The project is expected to be the first step in several new collaborative efforts involving ISE/USJ and Qatar University.

As part of this new collaboration with the Middle Eastern institution, Prof. André Antunes has also participated as invited speaker in the 2nd International Conference on Sabkha in Qatar, in Doha, during his recent visit in late January. His presentation, titled “Microbiology of Sabkhas of the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea: From Biodiversity, to Biotechnology, and Astrobiology” will contribute to an upcoming white paper on the preservation of these unique, and threatened coastal ecosystems in Qatar.
