INTRODUCTION:
We are living in a turbulent world with a lot of external noises and pressure affecting our whole well-being. How can we connect all things with our authentic self so as to understand, see and act for every day’s decisions and common good? How can a leader help developing the people into an integral being with care so as to sustain the vision?
The Deignan Award for Responsible Entrepreneurship inspires us to reflect on the desired qualities of a sustainable leader and organization. Hong Kong and Macau offer a unique intercultural and interfaith context in which Christian faith interacts with Chinese wisdom tradition revealing how sustainable leadership is being lived out. Through the intercultural lens of the Chinese cultural tradition, the understanding of its interpretation of Integral Human Development through “Yuanrong” “圓融”, meaning “integral”, may provide us a new approach to reveal integral leadership with spiritual care for a sustainable world. We are responsible to “restore the various levels of ecological equilibrium, establishing harmony within ourselves, with others, with nature and other living creatures, and with God” (Laudato Sì, No. 210).
Social transformation and sustainability cannot be achieved without the participation of leadership empowered by spirituality, knowledge and wisdom. However, leadership is more than knowledge, technique and skill: the spiritual dimension is foundational for the values of individual leaders. Hence, one fundamental issue closely related to social transformation is the development of Integral leadership and Spiritual care.

Last Saturday, on May 21st, 2022, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education’s Department of Psychology held an online public lecture, moderated by Prof. Vitor Teixeira, Head of the Department, on “An Integrative Framework for Working with Couples: Congruence Couple Therapy” by Dr. Bonnie Lee, Associate Professor in Health Sciences (Addictions Counselling) at the University of Lethbridge, Canada. More information on Dr. Lee’s work can be found here.
With over 20 participants from Macao, Hong Kong, Portugal and Canada, Dr. Lee discussed the historical and sociological evolution of couples, afterwards introducing and discussing the innovative integrative approach of Congruence Couple Therapy (CCT). CCT, effective in addressing a wide range of family issues, is a humanistic, deeply systemic, trauma-informed model that utilises the couple relationship as a resource to create significant clinical outcomes for addiction and mental health.
The engaging lecture introduced key research findings and practical examples of the implementation of this therapy, particularly relevant to the students of the University of Saint Joseph’s Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
The Department of Psychology looks forward to continuing promoting events that are open to the general public and showcase different approaches and interventions used in the field in order to promote mental health and well-being.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has successfully organised and held “The 1st Macao-wide English Writing and Recital Contest”, with the final round of contest and awarding ceremony held in the morning of Saturday, 21st of May, 2022, at the Auditório Centenário de Fátima in USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
The Macao-wide Contest aims to promote English language literacy and foster creativity among the local youth through poetry. It is open to all public or private elementary and secondary schools and university students across the region, attracting over 1,000 original poetries, with only 37 submissions selected to enter the final recital contest, including 15 in the Elementary school category, 15 in the Secondary category and 7 in the University category. Due to the pandemic, two contestants who were overseas in an exchange participated in the competition in the form of online live broadcast.
The participants were required to memorise and recite their works in front of a carefully selected judging panel. A total of 9 cash prizes worth of $19,000 patacas were given to the champion, first runner-up, and second runner-up of each category.
The judging panel consists of the Rector of USJ Rev. Prof. Stephen Morgan, Director of USJ English Centre (ELC) Prof. Duncan Miers, Senior Instructor from English Language Centre of the University of Macao Prof. Joshua Lee, Principal Lecturer of ELC Wesley McLaughlin, Lecturer of ELC Andrew Leong-Murphy, Lecturer of ELC Geoffrey Churchill, and Lecturer of ELC Dora Zhou.
All the submitted written works were evaluated based on their relevance, creativity and originality, coherence of form and structure, and clarity of imagery and language. Lastly, the finalists were evaluated based on stage presence and presentation, poise and spontaneity of recitation, intonation and poetic expression, and clarity of spoken words and diction during the recitation contest.
“This contest will help students build and accumulate knowledge in English poetry, cultivate their humanistic senses and aesthetic taste, discover their abilities of independent thinking, as well as the ability to explore freely and innovate independently.” said the Director of the English Center of USJ Prof. Duncan Miers.
Rector of USJ, Rev. Prof. Stephen Morgan, also commented that the response from the various schools and higher education institutions regarding the Contest has been very enthusiastic, foreseeing a future for continuity of the event. “The event was very successful in promoting English language education and poetry culture to the younger generation. The competition is expected to be held every year in the future, allowing more students to participate, thereby further enhancing their interest and language skills in English”.

On May 22, 2022, Year 1 students of the Bachelor of Social Work Programme joined the community health bazaar event at Ká-Hó, Coloane, Macau, organised by the Association of Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers of Macau (ARTM). The Department of Social Work Department (DSW) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) was one of the co-organizers in charge of a booth promoting community health.
Head of the Department of Social Work Prof. Jacky Ho, Prof. Leona Ng from the SWD, and the Year 1 Social Work students also jointly co-organized and developed the exhibition about mental health issues called "Our Mind 我瞞心聲展覽".
The mental health booth aims to give citizens a better understanding of depression due to the rate of suicide increased in Macau. Students demonstrated a great effort at the booth, involving the patients' point of view, how others viewed depression patients, expanding the participant's awareness of local services, etc. Moreover, participants were encouraged to write down their supporting messages to depression patients in the mental health booth.
To sum up, the booth at the community health bazaar was a new experience for the Social Work Year 1 students. It was the first time our Year 1 students developed their leadership, organizing, collaboration, and communication skills. Students also got the opportunity to interact with real-world experiences and learn more about mental health issues.

The team building experience day of the USJ Mentorship programme was held on Saturday, May 21, 2022.
The first activity involved a navigation game where formed teams had to find specific landmarks and later, share the process and experience on completing the tasks . The second activity was a sharing session between mentors and mentees, where both groups gave their honest opinion, comments and suggestion on how to improve the Mentorship Programme.
The University would like to express heartfelt thanks to its alumnus, Mr. Kent Nagata (Class of 2011), who sponsored the event's lunch and for his generous donation and continuous support throughout the years to his Alma Mater.
The "USJ Mentorship Programme" is designed to provide our students and young alumni with a valuable opportunity to seek career advice and guidance from alumni mentors from various industries.

Ms. Wang Rui, Director of Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Department of Education of Guizhou Province, and Rector Stephen Morgan of USJ entered into a strategic cooperation agreement in the presence of Vice Rector Zhang Shuguang, Vice-Chairman Chan Kuai Son of Our Committees, Director Teresa Loong of Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, Director Lam Pui Ieng of Office for Continuing Education and staff of USJ.
Led by Director Teresa Loong of Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, the delegation from the United Front Work Department of the Guizhou Provincial CPC Committee visited the library, student activity center, residential hall, audio-visual production, design and fabrication laboratories and the newly completed laboratory of applied neurosciences of USJ. The tour was followed by the signing ceremony of a strategic cooperation agreement with the management and department heads of USJ. In order to expand the effectiveness of the cooperation channels, the Macao Voice Raising Association acted as an associate coordinator for the aforesaid business and helped to facilitate the implementation of specific projects.
At the meeting, Rector Stephen Morgan welcomed the visit of the United Front Work Department of the Guizhou Provincial CPC Committee and the delegation, mentioning that USJ is a highly international institution with the faculty from more than 70 countries and regions around the world, and expressed his expectation for more links and cooperation with universities and organizations from Mainland in the future, so that more students can receive international education at USJ. Vice Rector Zhang Shuguang introduced USJ's historical background, which is based on the close cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries, making it one of the leading universities among the traditional international universities and playing an important role in the "Belt and Road" and "China-Portugal Economic and Trade Exchange Platform". Therefore, USJ has always taught its students positive and open-minded values in the humanities and social development. In addition, USJ also focuses on the arts and teacher training. Currently, most of the teachers in more than 80 non-tertiary institutions in Macao are graduates of USJ. USJ also emphasizes the development of intelligent technology and the environment by offering Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, and continues to focus on issues of concern to the Macao community, such as the application of big data and smart heath care, so as to deepen research and development in this field. Vice Rector Zhang said that USJ was honored to have the support of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China to start a trial of recruiting students from mainland this year, and hoped to have more in-depth exchanges and cooperation with Mainland in the future. Based on USJ's teaching characteristics and the unique cultural heritage of Guizhou, they expect to develop a series of talent training and exchange programmes.
Vice-Minister Liu shared that Guizhou Province has achieved the major goal of poverty alleviation under the leadership of the state, and now the focus is on regional construction and quality development. Economic reform and opening up will be the development positioning of Guizhou Province. As we share more of our Alumni Stories, we present to you the next alumnus that achieved excellence after her journey in USJ: meet Celia Yuen, a graduate from the Fashion Design Bachelor programme, and founder of Caelius Studio. In this exclusive interview with her, we look at Celia’s highlights before, during and after her stay in our University.
Before starting her journey as a Fashion Design student in USJ, Celia was previously studying the same course in Taiwan. However, it didn't suit her needs, and after a year, she decided to go back to Macau.
Upon returning to Macau, Celia had to choose an institution that would allow her to continue her studies in Fashion Design, eventually settling on USJ. Aside from the school’s positive reputation, Celia had another reason why she chose USJ. “I think the certificate given by USJ is really useful in Europe.” she explained, “I don’t plan on staying in Macao for my whole life. I think life can always change, so having this certificate is useful in case I want to work abroad.”
As she recalls her initial experience, she remembers her early struggles with communicating in English. “The first six months were a bit troubling for me because I really had to focus so I could understand the lectures. But after one year, my English got better.” When comparing the other schools she had been to, she praises the unique teaching approach given at USJ. “I really like the way they teach. They focus more on creativity and always make you think outside the box.” Out of all the inspirations she’s been given throughout her 4-year journey, Celia’s biggest one came in from her Programme Coordinator, Professor Filipa Martins. “She told me to just go try things and not be scared of failure, and so I did.”
During her years at USJ, Celia has gone on to accomplish quite a few things: she became the recipient of the CPTTM Fashion and Creative Education Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year. She also held a highly successful Fashion Collection for her graduation project, called ‘Rhythm.’ Soon after graduating, following Professor Filipa's advice, she decided to launch her own drawing and design Studio called "Caelius Studio". “I used to teach people how to draw privately. So with that in mind I decided to open a Facebook page and it doesn’t cost anything.” Since opening her Studio, Celia and Caelius have seen surges of success, establishing a multiple awarded platform for her skills. Additionally, she has supplemented her Studio by obtaining Level 7 and 8 Chinese Art Certificates for Sketching and Watercolours respectively.
We here at the University of Saint Joseph are very proud of Celia and the person she’s become and is more than pleased to see what more she has in store.

On the 5th of May 2022, the Department of Social Work of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) organised a Career Sharing Experience with Social Work alumni for the year 4 Social Work students. The purpose of the gathering is to build up a strong relationship between alumni and the graduating students.
The event was held on the 18th floor of the Residential Hall and partly supported by the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) as part of the USJ Social Community Bonding 2022 programme.
The event brought back more than a dozen alumni to their Alma Mater, all currently working for different organisations, including USJ's long-term partner Caritas Macau, sharing their interview experience and job-hunting strategies in the employment market.
The first half of the event included a sharing session revolving around each alumni’s experiences with job-hunting in the social work field, and the interpersonal skills gained working in the different social welfare agencies. This sharing session enhanced the students' knowledge concerning social work employment traits and work culture.
The second half of the event included a mock interview activity with the students. The alumni helped analyse the performance, pint-pointing the critical points students should pay attention to during the interview, and shared some interview answering skills during the activity.
Lastly, USJ invited alumna of social work and doctorate student Miss Marjory Vendramini, the Founder of the Cradle of Hope Association to share her experiences and insights on how social workers work with different professionals, including psychologists, with all the event's participants.
The event was successfully concluded with a refreshment and a souvenir gifting to the alumni participants.

The World Social Work Day activities jointly organized by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the Macao Federation of Trade Unions were held at the Youth Centre of Macao Federation of Trade Unions on 14 May, 2022.
This year’s World Social Work Day 2022 theme is Co-building a New Eco-Social World: Leaving No One Behind. More than 70 social workers, social work students and ex-offenders were in attendance. The day began with a play created by social work students which highlighted the importance of ex-offenders in family relationships, social worker support and being accepted in community. USJ Prof. Helen Liu, presented on the USJ’s Prison Outreach Programme, which she coordinates. Those in attendance then had the opportunity to hear from ex-offenders share their experiences and difficulties of re-entering society. After a lively discussion with government officials, representatives of ex-offenders service groups, and social workers present, it was concluded that Macao needs to continue to support the service work of ex-offenders. The organizers hope to promote the long-term development of relevant services and to attract society’s attention to the services of ex-offenders.
The following guests were in attendance: Ip Sio Mei, Director of Department of Social Reintegration of Social Work Bureau of Macao SAR Government; Ho Sio Mei, Director of Social Assistance, Education & Training Division of Correctional Services Bureau, Macao SAR Government; Pastor Wong Sio Kao, Macau Christian Prison Ministries; Chio Chong Kin, President of Noah Family Mutual Aid Association; Leong Wai Fong.
