The Book Presentation – “Colonial Citizenship: The Macau Route” will take place on 8 January from 6:30PM at the Rui Cunha Foundation.
About the Book:
“Colonial Citizenship” is the «the first legal work comprehensively addressing colonial belonging, assimilation, and access to rights in the Portuguese empire of Asia and Africa. Based on the analysis of how citizenship emerged and developed in the Portuguese context, covering a period between the fifteenth century and the postcolonial present, the monograph argues that citizenship has a fundamental link with Portuguese coloniality, which continues to shape Portuguese legal reality and access to nationality and citizenship», according to the author’s manifest.
From foreign trading post to the last Portuguese colony, «Macau occupies a privileged space in this analysis. Its demographic, political, geographical, and legal particularities make Macau a strategic piece in analyzing Portuguese imperial legal conditions». By presenting a «critical citizenship approach, a nuanced view of Portuguese empire, and novel archival findings, the crossroads between colonial citizenship and Macau invites one to think about race, belonging and rights, from a contextualized postcolonial and current perspective. It fundamentally asks the question: who is entitled to rights and citizenship during and after the empire?».
MC Loureiro gathers in his monograph “Colonial Citizenship” archival research, jurisprudence, and contextual analysis to trace how rights were distributed and denied across the Portuguese empire. Before joining the University of Leicester, he was a Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of University of London and the University of Birmingham, as well as a Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute, the University of Lisbon, and the NOVA University of Lisbon.
