USJ Holds Welcome Ceremony for New Mainland Students

USJ held the Welcome Ceremony for New Mainland Students 2026/2027 on 17 September 2026, in the Don Bosco Auditorium, aimed to help new mainland students adapt and integrate into campus life.
To facilitate new mainland students’ adaptation and integration into campus life at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), the university held the Welcome Ceremony for New Mainland Students 2026/2027 on 17 September 2026.
Welcome Ceremony for New Mainland Students 2026/2027
The event took place in the afternoon at the Don Bosco Auditorium of USJ Ilha Verde Campus. The following guests were invited to attend the ceremony: Mr. Chu Zhiwen, representative of the Education and Youth Affairs Department of the Liaison Office; Mr. Sam Hio Tong, Acting Head of the Department of Tertiary Education of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ); Ms. Lai Cheok Leng, Principal Senior Technician of the Division of Quality Assurance of Education of DSEDJ; Dr. Alejandro Salcedo Garcia, the Rector (Interim) of USJ ; Ms. Jenny Lam, Head of the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA); and Mr. Ben Lei, Head of the Domestic Student Recruitment Office (DSRO).
The event began with the welcoming remarks of Dr. Alejandro Salcedo, the Rector (Interim) of USJ. He sincerely thanked the Ministry of Education of the Central People’s Government for approving USJ of the expansion of enrollment quota and provinces/cities for mainland students in the 2026/2027 academic year, as well as the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government (LOCPG) and the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) for their long-standing support and recognition of the university.
He emphasized that in the upcoming academic journey, new students will have the opportunity to learn and live together with staff members and peer students from different nationalities around the world. In the multicultural environment of USJ , this will not only help broaden international horizons, but also serve as a valuable platform for cultivating cross-cultural communication and collaboration skills. He encouraged students to seize opportunities, unleash their potential, and become better versions of themselves.
At the event, Miss Liang Wanqi (D-BA, Year 1) and Mr. Jia Zhiming(MBA, Year 2) shared their study experiences and the practical opportunities available at the university. Liang Wanqi reflected on her academic journey of completing her master’s degree at the university and continuing on to doctoral studies. Using “enrichment” and “growth” as her keywords, she described to the new students a postgraduate experience that went far beyond textbook learning. She said the university is composed of a high-quality international faculty team, with professors coming from different countries and regions around the world, possessing cutting-edge academic concepts and rich teaching experience. The diverse teaching modes and open academic thinking in the classroom broke her traditional understanding of learning, enabling her to learn to think about issues from multiple perspectives and more rigorously, greatly enhancing her professional competence and academic vision.
Apart from the faculty, her fellow students were also valuable learning resources. She pointed out that most of her classmates came from various industries, with rich workplace experience and unique life experiences. Through daily classroom discussions and group collaboration, they learned from one another and exchanged experiences, and she gained much practical thinking and industry knowledge beyond textbooks, which she considered a very precious reward on her postgraduate journey. Beyond her studies, she also actively participated in various on- and off-campus practical activities. During her master’s studies, as a non-local student, she took part in large-scale volunteer service for the National Games, stepping out of campus and facing large-scale event settings directly, which not only trained her communication skills and ability to respond on the spot, but also cultivated her sense of responsibility and teamwork awareness. She also particularly mentioned the exclusive high-quality resources the university provides for students.
Jia Zhiming(MBA, year2) shared his experience of studying at USJ. He explained while serving as a volunteer for the 15th National Games of the People’s Republic of China, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities , he witnessed the unity and inclusiveness of all sectors of Macao and teachers and students from different universities. He stressed that being able to serve the event alongside students from various higher education institutions was meaningful, and that although Macao is small, it is full of warmth. He encouraged freshmen to step out of the classroom and participate in large-scale activities to gain experience through practice. At the same time, he noted that outside of class, one should not forget to enjoy a balanced study life, such as watching the International Fireworks Festival and major sports events. He encouraged freshmen to broaden their horizons through activities while focusing on their studies, and looked forward to everyone starting their own story here.
Intellectual Property Protection and Combating Illegal Trafficking
At the event, in order to further enhance students’ understanding of intellectual property protection and combating illegal trafficking activities, USJ also invited representatives from the Macao Customs to present important information regarding intellectual property protection, The officers from designated units introduced the relevant laws and regulations, common types of infringement acts, and methods for identifying and preventing infringing products in daily life, and shared the results and cases of border enforcement, cross-border cooperation, and online patrols. Regarding combating illegal trafficking activities, they also focused on explaining various smuggling methods, trafficking trends, and how risk management, intelligence analysis, and technological means are used to improve law enforcement efficiency, reminding students to avoid falling foul of the law unintentionally. At the end of the event, a Q&A session was held to allow students to exchange views with the representatives.
Enhancing Legal Awareness and Supporting Students’ Holistic Development
This event not only gave mainland freshmen a deeper understanding of USJ’s campus life, learning resources, and Macao’s social environment, but also, through the professional presentation by the representatives from the Macao Customs, raised students’ awareness of laws and regulations. In the future, USJ will actively carry out more campus activities to support students’ holistic development.
