The Department of Architecture and Design at USJ proudly presents INSIGHT, the 2026 Bachelor Graduation Show of Architecture & Design.
The Department of Architecture and Design at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) proudly presents INSIGHT, the 2026 Bachelor Graduation Show of Architecture & Design, showcasing the capstone works of this year’s graduating cohort.
INSIGHT reflects on the vision and ambition of Macao’s next generation of creatives, offering a closer look at their approaches to architecture and design. The exhibition brings together a collection of projects that address pressing issues while drawing on Macao’s cultural idiosyncrasies and future challenges.
The projects address questions of social relevance, ecological balance, and cultural context, united by a shared aim: to build sustainable communities and a more liveable Macao. Through thought-provoking design interventions and forward-looking architectural concepts, INSIGHT gives students a platform to shape dialogue on the evolution of Macao’s urban and cultural landscape.
By bringing these works to the wider community, the exhibition seeks to bridge academia and society, strengthening cohesion and encouraging engagement with pressing questions of design and sustainability. More than a showcase of talent, INSIGHT is a catalyst for reflection and discussion on the creative forces shaping Macao’s future.
MACAO IN TRANSFORMATION
Graduation Exhibition of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies
Macao in Transformation presents the studio projects of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies programme at the University of Saint Joseph, developed this year as a joint studio with the School of Architecture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Set within Central District 1 (中區 1), the projects envision a forward-looking community grounded in sustainability, public life, and cultural relevance.
Conceived as a vertical studio, the work brings together Year 3 and Year 4 students around a shared context. Beginning with urban analysis, students developed architectural programmes responding to Macao’s evolving needs — Year 3 on the low-rise, high-density Patane site, Year 4 on the medium-rise Ouvidor Arriaga site.
Long defined by its Sino-Portuguese heritage, Macao now faces extreme density, spatial fragmentation, and environmental vulnerability. Within this context, these emerging architects reinterpret the city not as a set of constraints but as a catalyst for inclusive, resilient, and human-scaled community life.
ROOTED DESIGN
Graduation Exhibition of the Bachelor of Design
The Bachelor of Design programme presents its graduation works under the curatorial premise of Rooted Design, a body of capstone projects that ask what the roots of Macao’s urban identity might be, and how design can carry them forward. Spanning furniture, product, editorial, digital, interaction, and game design, the works treat the territory’s distinctive visual and material culture not as a fixed inheritance to be preserved, but as a living resource to be interpreted and reimagined.
Each project follows a research-driven process that moves from initial inspiration through enquiry and ideation to final realisation, translating cultural research into materials, forms, narratives, and experiences. In addressing a field that remains sparsely published, Rooted Design offers a model of design-led research grounded in place – one in which rigorous enquiry and critical reflection underpin creative practice, and in which emerging designers give form to the city they inhabit while reaching towards its future.
