USJ reinforces Macao as bridge to international high-quality talent with Philippines International Business and Trade Tour, representing the first large-scale collaboration between USJ and the Philippines.

In May 2026, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in Macao hosted a group of international business and trade students from De La Salle University – Dasmariñas (DLSU-D). The group was led by Professor Joseph R. Estelle from the Department of Business Administration in the College of Business Administration and Accountancy. The delegation was welcomed by the Consul General of the Philippines in Macau, the Honourable Edna May G. Lazaro, and the Acting Rector of the University of Saint Joseph, Dr. Alejandro Salcedo. The delegation also included Professors Erik Canedo-DADO, Mariele Joy Mengullo and Julie Ann Almodol, as well as over 40 other participants from the college.

The student exchange focused on Macao’s role as an economic and trade platform for Portuguese-speaking countries, and its position as an important bridge within the Belt and Road Initiative and the ASEAN network. Given Macao’s historical links with the Philippines, as well as the significant Filipino expatriate community living and working in Macao and Hong Kong SARs, it is highly relevant for international business and trade students from the Philippines to understand Macao’s economic positioning and advantages for conducting business in the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area.

These discussions were complemented by a seminar hosted by the Macau Live Streaming Association’s Executive Director, Mr. José Chan Rodrigues.

In line with the government’s policy of promoting the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) industry in Macao, the students also visited the TCM manufacturing facilities of ‘Zhang Quan Po Tong You’, a unique Macao brand specialising in TCM medicine for external use, located in the Nam Yue Technology Park in Coloane.

The students also experienced Chinese culture and learnt about the history of the Belt and Road Initiative on a sponsored tour of the MGM Poly Museum, where they explored one of the most advanced technological backstage tours at MGM COTAI.

This initiative by USJ presented Macao as an international leisure centre and promoted study tours to stimulate the local economy, in line with the SAR government’s “tourism + education” policy. At the same time, it promoted the Belt and Road Initiative, focusing on collaboration with universities and the development of high-quality talent. This tour represents the first large-scale collaboration between USJ and the Philippines, and USJ will continue to provide opportunities for Asian countries and universities to understand Macau’s development as a platform for serving Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries.
