During the seminar, Lou presented the unique characteristics of Macao’s community education model, highlighting two practical frameworks: the “6A Character Education” approach and the concept of a “One-Hour Co-Education Circle”.
A seminar exploring collaborative pathways for community education in the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin brought together educators, social workers, and families on 22 March. Among the featured speakers was Assistant Professor Jayson Lou, a faculty member in the Social Work Department at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), who shared insights drawn from Macau’s distinctive approach to community-based education.
The event, titled “Diverse Co-Education, Building the Future Together”, was co-organised by the Hengqin Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone Women’s Federation and the Guangdong Office of the Macau Women’s General Association. It took place at the Qin’ao Parent-Child Activity Center and drew approximately 80 participants, including children’s service professionals, education experts, parents, and community members.

During the seminar, Lou presented the unique characteristics of Macao’s community education model, highlighting two practical frameworks: the “6A Character Education” approach and the concept of a “One-Hour Co-Education Circle”. He proposed that these frameworks could serve as foundations for integrating resources across Hengqin and Macau, enabling the development of a “menu-style” holistic education resource bank and individualised “growth portfolios” for students. His remarks emphasised moving from isolated efforts toward a more interconnected and collaborative educational ecosystem.
Lou brings to his role at USJ extensive frontline experience in social work, having spent over a decade in the field. His research and practice focus on youth development and social work interventions, with an emphasis on translating theory into actionable community strategies.

The seminar also featured presentations from other experts, including Professor Chen Yachuan from Beijing Normal University’s Zhuhai campus and Zhong Yunxin, Director of the Mental Health Education and Counseling Center at Zhuhai Art College. Panel discussions centered on how academic support, psychological support, and developmental guidance can be integrated to better serve children and families in the rapidly developing Hengqin region.
A distinctive component of the event was the inclusion of direct dialogue sessions — “Conversations with Children” and “Conversations with Parents” — where young students voiced their hopes for more unstructured playtime and parental presence, while parents shared their concerns about raising children and their desire for stronger community support systems.
The seminar was organized as part of ongoing efforts by the Macau Women’s General Association’s Guangdong Office to deepen collaboration between Hengqin and Macau in areas of family education and community services.
