A group of staff and students from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) participated in a series of activities commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance. The initiative aims to help staff and students of diverse nationalities, particularly the younger generation, to deeply understand the great significance of this victory and carry forward the indomitable spirit of Chinese people.

Witnessing the Military Parade, Forging Patriotic Hearts

To further deepen patriotic education and strengthen national sentiment,  on 3 September, the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) of USJ coordinated a group of staff and students to watch the live broadcast of the “Grand Gathering in Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War” at the Macao Polytechnic University Multi-Sport Pavilion. From the great historical significance of the victory, they absorbed its spiritual power; from the glorious achievements of national development and the mighty presence of the people’s military, they witnessed the pride of the era. This transcendent power of victory has been transformed into a firm belief and endless motivation for the faculty and students to strive forward.

Xie Sisi, a second-year student in the Master of Environmental Sciences and Management (MESM) at the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) who participated in the activity, expressed that watching the military parade live broadcast in Macao, the neat formations and resolute march of the procession made her heart surge with emotion. She deeply felt the prosperity and strength of the motherland, filled with pride and excitement.

Participating in the Youth Forum, Gaining Insight into the Spirit of the War of Resistance

In the evening on the same day, USJ students also participated in the Macao Youth Forum organized by the Education and Youth Development Bureau. This further enhanced the youths’ comprehensive understanding of the great journey of the Chinese people’s victory in the War of Resistance. A second-year master’s student majoring in Special Education in the School of Education (SED) who attended the forum mentioned that the event featured distinguished guest speakers, including the experts from the International Research Center on the Unit 731 Issue at the Harbin Academy of Social Sciences and the Institute for Social and Cultural Research of the Macau University of Science and Technology. Through the experts’ explanations of the national spirit and social mobilization during the War of Resistance, she gained a deeper appreciation of the important role educators play in passing down historical memory and nurturing a sense of national identity, finding the experience highly enlightening.

Visiting Exhibition to Remember History and Honor Martyrs

On the 19th of September, the university also arranged a visit to the Exhibition Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Led by the Vice Rector, Dr. Teresa Loong, the group arrived at the Complex of Commerce and Trade Co-operation Platform for China and Portuguese-speaking Countries at 1 p.m. The exhibition was divided into six sections, and the staff and students listened attentively to the docents’ explanations, deeply inspiring the spirit of national unity and self-improvement. This activity not only enhanced everyone’s understanding of the history of the War of Resistance but also, through precious historical materials, recalled the heroic chapters of the Chinese people’s persevering struggle during the war. It allowed the younger generation to deeply recognize the great significance of the victory in the War of Resistance.
