The University of Saint Joseph’s Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) co-hosted two parent seminars with Escola Santa Maria Mazzarello under the “Chinese Literacy Education and Research (CLEAR) Project”.
On 6 September, the University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) co-hosted two parent seminars with Escola Santa Maria Mazzarello under the “Chinese Literacy Education and Research (CLEAR) Project”. As one part of the school’s new school year parents’ meeting, these seminars aimed to reduce parenting stress by supporting parents to understand their children’s language development and improve parent-child communication. Over 175 parents attended the seminars.
Instructed by Prof. Miranda Mak, Assistant Professor of the School of Education, and Ms. Tammy Chu, a CLEAR project instructor, the two seminars were delivered with the themes “Parent-Child Shared Reading” and “Getting Ready for Reading and Writing”. The talks addressed challenges young children may face in reading and writing during the transition to primary school, and introduced practical strategies for writing and character recognition, helping parents prepare their children for this crucial stage. Participating parents found the tips useful for paving the way for their children’s primary school education.
The non-profit CLEAR project, housed in USJ’s Bishop Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education, supports early childhood Chinese literacy development. To date, CLEAR has extensive experience in serving schools in Macao and has published a range of educational resources, including textbooks.
