USJ Alumni Mentors Sharing Event offered Bachelor students from the School of Education valuable insights into teaching and serving in local schools.



In the evening of the 12th of May, 2023, the University of Saint Joseph Macao (USJ) held its Alumni Mentors Sharing Event as part of the Career Development Series 2023 sponsored by the Macao Foundation. Around 30 students from Year 1 to 3 from the School of Education attended the event.

Among the attendees were Prof. Susannah Sun, the Programme Coordinator for the Bachelor in Education, Prof. Miranda Mak, the Research Coordinator for the School of Education and Coordinator of the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education, and Dr. Teresa Loong, the Director of the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs. Present Faculty members include Prof. Hao Wu, Prof. Helen Liu, USJ Counsellor Ms. Helen Lao, and Ms. Phoebe Cao.

Students had the opportunity to engage in sincere dialogue with the alumni mentors, Becky Chan Kei Pek and Gigi Tam Chi Ieng, who shared their real experiences of teaching and working in local schools. They also provided valuable advice on how to navigate the challenges of teaching and offered insights into what it takes to succeed in the field of education.

The participating students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about the industry through their exchange with the alumni mentors, they also expressed their desire to participate in similar events more frequently in the future.

Furthermore, the Alumni Mentors Sharing Event aimed to echo the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 8. SDG 4 focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, while SDG 8 is focused on promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

Overall, the Alumni Mentors Sharing Event was a great success, providing students with valuable insights into the world of education and offering them the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with experienced professionals in the field. The USJ Mentorship Programme and the Career Development Series 2023 sponsored by the Macao Foundation will continue to provide students and young alumni with valuable resources and opportunities to help them succeed in their chosen careers.
