Professor Zhang Shuguang

Laboratory Consultant

Biography

Dr. Zhang Shuguang is Professor of Global Studies and Vice-Rector for External Affairs and Institutional Development at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). He also serves as member of Talent Development Committee and Creative Industry Committee of the Macau SAR Government. He owned a Ph.D. in international history from The Ohio University and Olin post-doctoral fellowship in international security at Yale University. His academic career in higher education has been truly international: he taught for 16 years at the University of Maryland (USA) and worked respectively as a Research Fellow at the Nobel Peace Institute of Norway, a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as a Distinguished “Changjiang” Professor and Vice President at Shanghai International Studies University of China. Before joining USJ, he was Senior Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at Macau University of Science and Technology (2011-2015) and Rector of City University of Macau (2015-2020).

Professor George Du Wencai

Biography

Professor Dr. George (Wencai) Du is Dean of the Institute for Data Engineering and Sciences (IDEAS) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). He earned his bachelor’s degree from Peking University in 1978 and two Master’s degrees from Hohai University in 1986 and in computer sciences from Twente University, Netherlands in 1996, respectively, and his PhD in Informatics from Adelaide University in 1999.

He worked with the Canberra University of Australia and Postdoctoral researcher at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Then he returned to China, Dr. Du served as Dean of the College of Information Science & Technology at Hainan University for thirteen years, Director of the Hainan Province Research Center for Ocean Communication and Network Engineering (2005-2019). After then, Dr.Du was Chair Professor (2017-2021) and Founding Director of the Institute of Data Science at the City University of Macau (2017-2019) and Founding Director of the Macao Big Data Research Centre for Urban Governance (2017-2021). During his tenure at City University, Chair Professor Du created Master’s and doctoral programs in Data Sciences.

His main research areas include computer sciences, communication and information systems, data sciences, and artificial intelligence, recently, with special interests in machine learning, smart elderly healthcare, and data analytics. He conducted 11 projects, including “The National Key Research and Development Plan”, “National Science and Technology Support Project”, “The International Cooperation” project, and Natural Science Fund, with the project amount of nearly 80 million yuan.

He has published over 200 academic articles in national and international journals and international conference proceedings in the last ten years, published 20 books and 6 book chapters, and earned one international invention patent and 15 national invention patents. He has won 9 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards and 4 teaching excellence awards.

Prof. Du was selected as a Chinese Scholar in 2008 and was selected as a famous Chinese scholar to witness the 60th anniversary of China. In 2015, he was selected as the backbone of Chinese Science and Technology – Outstanding Scientist.

Dr. Du serves in academic positions including Executive Director of the International Society for Computer and Information Science (ACIS, USA), Chief Scientist of the China Smart City Expert Committee (2023–), Member of the China Big Data Expert Committee (2015–), Vice President of Bay Area Association for Artificial Intelligence (2019–). Professor Du also served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Information Technology and Integrity (2022–); Deputy Editor of UK Journal of Algorithms and Computational Technology (2022–); and Associated Editor: Invertis Journal of Science and Technology, India. Journal Associate Editor 2009, Frontiers in Neuroscience, Guest editor. Professor Du has been the chairman/co-chair/Program Committee Chairman of IEEE, ACIS, and other international academic conferences more than 15 times.

Dr Jacky Ho

Principal Investigator (PI)

Biography

Dr Jacky Ho completed his studies in Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and Health from the University of Sydney (Australia), specialized in Gerontology, dementia and sleep science. He is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Co-Dean of the USJ-Kong Hon Academy for Cellular Nutrition and Health, and the Director of Macao Observatory for Social Development at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), he was appointed as the Member of the UN-China Responsible Education Management and Sustainability Research Centre ESG Innovation Centre Committee. He established the Department of Innovative Social Work and the Macau Healthy Lifestyle Research Centre, and was appointed as the Head of the department during his service at the City University of Macau.

His research interest including ‘ageing and health’, ‘hypertension and CVD’, ‘chronic diseases prevention and management’, ‘dementia and social support’, ‘physical activity’, ‘sleep physiology and pathology’ and ‘occupational health and risk’. His current study is focusing on the establishment of community-based telemedicine and chronic diseases management model in Macau and the Greater Bay Area.

He has published on international and peer-reviewed journals including ‘American Journal of Hypertension’, ‘Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health’, ‘Journal of Sleep Research’, ‘Journal of Women’s Health’, ‘Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’ and ‘Journal of Public Health Nutrition’. He has often been invited as keynote speaker at international conferences and symposiums and has served as an expert member on the Macau Social Worker Professional Registration and Licensing drafting committee. Actively participated and served as consultant and board member in several organizations including the Macau Social Workers Association, Macau Society of Registered Psychotherapists, Macau Hypertension Alliance, Macau Alzheimer Disease Association and Hung Wing Sport Association, as well as an life-time member in the Golden Key International Honour Society and academic advisor for the Macau Model United Nations Promotion Association.

Professor Guanglong Du

Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI)

Biography

Guanglong Du is a Co-PI at the USJ Smart Aging Care Lab, and a professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Computer Science and Technology of South China University of Technology, and the director of the Joint Laboratory of Intelligent Active Rehabilitation. In the past 5 years, he has published 1 Nature Communications journal paper, 27 SCI papers, 257 SCI citations, and obtained 22 authorized patents, including 19 authorized invention patents, 2 authorized utility model patents, and 1 authorized design patent. It has been supported by the Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Youth Fund, the Guangdong Provincial Special Support Program Science and Technology Innovation Youth Top-notch Talent Project, the Guangzhou Pearl River Science and Technology Rising Star Talent Project, and the South China University of Technology Outstanding Youth Fund. He is the person in charge of the sub-project of the National Key R&D Program and the winner of the excellent doctoral dissertation of Guangdong Province.

His Research Direction includes 1) Focusing on the “artificial intelligence-driven natural interaction method”, the natural human-computer interaction is realized through innovation in three levels: interactive behavior recognition, interactive intention understanding, and interactive instruction learning; and 2) Research and development of transcranial magnetic stimulation navigation system to effectively treat patients with brain dysfunction; Research and development of intelligent ultrasonic scanning robot to achieve fully automatic intelligent scanning and result analysis

Professor Kai Li

Biography

Kai Li is Co-PI at the USJ Smart Aging Care Lab, a Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Academic Dean of School of Information Engineering of Hangzhou Medical College, Dean of Future Health Frontier Interdisciplinary Research Institute of Hangzhou Medical College, Executive Deputy Director of Zhejiang Engineering Research Center for Brain Cognition and Brain Diseases Digital Medical Instruments, Director of Zhejiang-Japan Digital Diagnosis and Treatment and Equipment of Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine for Major Brain Diseases Joint Laboratory, Young Scholar of Zhijiang, Zhejiang Province, Head of Intelligent Medicine of Hangzhou Medical College, and Distinguished Researcher of Waseda University, Japan.

His Research Direction includes 1) Cognitive neurocomputing and decision neuroscience. New techniques and methods for early digital diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease/Parkinson’s disease Early digital early warning and digital therapy for depression/autism New critical early warning techniques and methods for the evolution of major brain diseases; and 2) Research and development of advanced digital medical devices Brain cognition and research and development of digital medical devices for diseases New technology of digital diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese medicine and research and development of advanced medical devices.

Associate Professor Chen Tong

Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI)

Biography

Prof. Cheng Tong is a Co-PI at the USJ Smart Aging Care Lab. In recent years, she has published more than 20 SCI, EI-indexed journals, monographs and domestic high-level academic papers, mainly focusing on the fields of early intelligent screening for Alzheimer’s disease, digital biomarkers for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, and deep brain electrical stimulation therapy for Parkinson’s disease. She has also presided over and participated in 7 projects at national, military, provincial and ministerial levels, and has won 1 Army Science and Technology Progress Award (Third Class). She has presided over one sub-project of the National Science and Technology Support Programme (with a project funding of 1.5 million yuan), one applied research on the clinical characteristics of the capital city, and two army healthcare projects. She is in charge of the outpatient clinic for cognitive and movement disorders in PLA General Hospital. The project ‘Diagnostic value of multimodal molecular imaging in neurodegenerative diseases’ won the third prize of scientific and technological achievements of PLA General Hospital. In cooperation with the neurosurgery team, she has carried out preoperative evaluation and postoperative programme control management of deep brain electrical stimulation, and in cooperation with the Tsinghua research team, she has achieved remote programme control management of postoperative deep brain electrical stimulation, and has managed more than 500 patients/year.

Prof. Chen Tong is an Editorial board member of Chinese Journal of Geriatric Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Diseases and Journal of the PLA Medical College; Member of the Movement Disorders Group of the Neurology Branch of the Beijing Medical Association; Member of the Movement Disorders Group, Neurology Branch, Science and Technology Committee of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA); Member of Cognitive Disorders Group, Neurology Division, Science and Technology Committee of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army; and Member of Neuromodulation and Function Repair Committee, Chinese Society for the Promotion of Human Health.

Dr. Chao He

Biography

Dr. Chao He is a Co-PI at the USJ Smart Aging Care Lab and the Founder and Chairman of Shenzhen Chuangda Cloud Smart Energy Technology Co., LTD. Doctor of Data Science, Master of Software Engineering from Peking University, Bachelor of Computer Science and Technology from Beijing Jiaotong University, MBA from Hong Kong Baptist University; Shenzhen high-level talent, Hong Kong talent, visiting scholar of University of Otago, New Zealand, Chinese Academy of Sciences – Southern University of Science and Technology joint master tutor.18 years of management and chip software and hardware system development experience in large technical service companies; He used to be the general manager and R&D director of Zhongke Chuangda Shenzhen, and the senior system software engineer of LSI of Samsung Electronics..

His projects include a study on brain function during the sleep process based on EEG-fMRI and its application in patients with insomnia disorders, conducted from 2019 to 2023. He also worked on a major project funded by the Ministry of Technology from 2021 to 2023, focusing on the research and application of an accurate evaluation and individualized prevention and treatment system for insomnia disorders in collaboration with Southern Hospital, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, and the Institute of Medical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Between 2019 and 2021, he was involved in long-term EEG analysis of patients with brain injuries at the Department of Anesthesiology, Beijing 301 Hospital. From 2018 to 2020, he participated in a project at Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital that explored the use of wearable devices in patients with apnea, as well as a study on the circadian rhythm of newborns at Qinghai Red Cross Hospital. He also contributed to Shanghai Huashan Hospital’s key clinical discipline project in Gerontology. Furthermore, he is engaged in a national key research and development project at Peking University aimed at developing key technologies for a personalized and precise guidance program for promoting human movement and health.

Associate Professor Liang Shengbin

Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI)

Biography

Liang Shengbin, PhD in Data Science, FDCT funded postdoctoral fellow, is currently an associate professor and master’s supervisor at Henan University. He is also a Co-PI at the USJ Smart Aging Care Lab. His research interests mainly include crowd intelligence algorithms, precision medicine and deep learning. Dr. Liang focuses on the frontiers of artificial intelligence and is good at engineering development. Many of his projects have been applied and promoted in education, government, communications and other fields.

In the field of smart healthcare, for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other elderly diseases, He proposed AD classification algorithms and MCI early warning models for high-dimensional multimodal medical images. Related results have been published in SCI journals such as Applied Intelligence, Physics in Medicine and Biology, Journal of Supercomputing, and International Journal of Fuzzy & Intelligent Systems.

He designed intelligent recommendation models and algorithms based on deep learning, and used deep reinforcement learning and graph convolutional neural network structures in the recall, ranking, and score prediction of recommendation models. Some results have been published in SCI journals such as Big Data.

In terms of text sentiment analysis and medical text classification, the accuracy and efficiency of medical text classification were improved by using dual-channel mechanism and preprocessing model, and the relevant results were published in SCI journals such as Information Technology & Control and Plos One.

At the same time, 2 national invention patents and 9 software copyrights were authorized in the above fields. As the editor-in-chief, he published 4 textbooks and participated in the editing of 4 textbooks. In the past three years, he has presided over 3 projects including Henan Provincial Science and Technology Research Projects and Henan Provincial University Key Scientific Research Projects, presided over and completed many horizontal projects, and received 4 million yuan in scientific research funds.

Associate Professor Tang Hao

Biography

Professor Tang Hao is a Co-PI at the USJ Smart Aging Care Lab. In recent years, he has published more than 40 papers in international high-level journals such as Science, IEEE TFS, IEEE TIM, IEEE IOTJ, RCIM, 16 papers in Top journals of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 ESI highly cited papers, and 2 ESI hot papers. In the fields of digital twin and embedded high-performance controller, he has been responsible for 1 project of National Natural Science Foundation, 1 Talent project of Hainan Province, 1 project of Hainan Natural Science Foundation, 3 key research and development projects of Hainan Province, 2 key science and technology plan projects of Haikou City, 2 university-level projects, and 2 horizontal projects. Participated in 2 national key R&D projects as the backbone; Applied for more than 20 invention patents; Published two academic monographs and three teaching materials; Participated in the formulation of 1 national standard and 1 group standard. Part of the results through cooperation with enterprises, directly or indirectly to create more than 20 million yuan of economic benefits. At the same time, he guided students to participate in scientific research competitions and won 1 national competition award and 13 provincial and ministerial competition awards. He also won one national teaching competition award and two provincial awards.

Pandeng Li

Senior Engineering

Biography

Pandeng Li is a Senior Engineer at the USJ Smart Aging Care Lab. He has long-term employment with a listed medical group, where he is responsible for the technology and management of informationization, intelligence, smart hospitals, and the integration of medical and elderly care within the group’s hospitals. With over 20 years of experience in the research, development, and management of smart healthcare and wellness, he has spent more than a decade as the general manager of a smart healthcare subsidiary listed on the medical market. Pandeng has successfully developed hospital information systems, including Hospital Information Systems (HIS), Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), office automation (OA) systems, and physical examination systems. He also has experience in intelligent engineering design and construction for more than ten tertiary hospitals. Additionally, he established a company that successfully developed smart ward systems, smart healthcare systems, and supporting hardware products.
