Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Professor Alexandre Lobo, recently took part in a colloquium organised by FORGES (Forum da Gestão do Ensino Superior nos Países e Regiões de Língua Portuguesa). Held in partnership with the Universidade de Lisboa, the event focused on the theme “Artificial Intelligence and Emergent Technologies in Higher Education“, bringing together academic leaders and researchers from across the Lusophone community.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into higher education has become a defining topic for universities worldwide. As generative AI tools become increasingly accessible, institutions are faced with fundamental questions about academic integrity, teaching methodologies, assessment models, and curriculum design. The discussions at the colloquium reflected the need for a coordinated and thoughtful response to these technological shifts, one that balances innovation with the core values of academic rigour and ethical responsibility.

During the sessions, participants examined a range of institutional responses to these challenges, including the development of regulatory frameworks, ethical guidelines, and new pedagogical approaches. The conversations highlighted the importance of collaborative governance models that involve both educators and students in shaping how AI is integrated into academic life.

Professor Alexandre Lobo contributed to the discussions with a focus on practical engagement with these emerging technologies. He noted that artificial intelligence is already a present reality in education, and that the primary task for institutions is not to question its use but to ensure transparency and foster open dialogue among all stakeholders. He emphasised the importance of motivating professors and students to participate in co-creating solutions and integrating diverse perspectives into academic practices.

His intervention highlighted the importance of moving beyond resistance toward constructive integration, fostering a culture where AI is addressed through dialogue, shared responsibility, and institutional clarity.

As a potential outcome of the Colloquium, participating institutions are exploring the creation of a collaborative Forum to continue sharing initiatives, best practices, and strategic approaches to AI integration in higher education.

USJ’s participation in the event reflects its commitment to advancing innovation in research and teaching while maintaining a focus on academic excellence, integrity, and a human-centered approach to education.
