A group of USJ students and professors participated in the Sands China’s Sustainability Tour at the Venetian in Cotai, last November 13, 2020.

This visit is part of an annual activity organised for the Life and Science module since 2015, intended for students to learn and witness first-hand how the local tourism industries achieve sustainability in their facilities. The visit started with a presentation about the Sands Eco-360 program and how it achieves the SDGs, especially on issues related to energy, water, and waste. This was followed by a site tour that gave participants a glimpse of the various sustainable practices being implemented: installation of LED and other energy-efficient lights, optimisation of cooling and heating systems, water-efficient systems, facilities for waste/plastic/paper recycling, and food waste compactors.

The tour ended with a visit to the hanging sculpture by local artist Eloi Scarva. The artwork, titled “Project Hive”, made from 10,000 repurposed plastic cups collected from the Venetian Macao, visibly reflects the vast amount of plastic waste generated from the use of plastic water bottles.
