USJ hosted a two-day “Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival” event series aimed to enhance students’ understanding of traditional Chinese festivals, foster cross-cultural interaction, and deepen their appreciation of Chinese cultural traditions.
The “Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival” series of events, jointly organised by the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) and the USJ Library, took place on September 29 and 30 at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus. This cultural experience initiative was aimed to promote cross-cultural exchange among students while providing a platform for faculty and students of diverse nationalities to come together, experience the unique charm of Chinese culture, and deepen their understanding of traditional festivals.

Eco-Friendly Glass Lantern Workshop: Combining Education and Fun to Promote Sustainability and Cultural Heritage
To raise environmental awareness and enhance the festive spirit, the university organized an “Eco-Friendly Glass Lantern Workshop.” The workshop, held in two sessions on September 29, centered on the theme of “Sustainability and Innovation.” Through hands-make activities, students gained a deeper understanding of resource recycling while learning about traditional festival culture. Under the guidance of USJ staff members, participants transformed discarded glass bottles and hemp strings into beautiful lanterns, honing their creativity and appreciating the joy of “turning waste into art.” During the event, undergraduate students (UG) also crafted glass lanterns as gifts for their senior postgraduate peers in evening programs, extending warm wishes and fostering a sense of community. The activity successfully integrated festive celebrations with environmental awareness, delivering both education and entertainment.

Mid-Autumn Experience Activity: Enhancing Cross-Cultural Understanding Among International Faculty and Students
The Mid-Autumn experience activity was held on September 30 at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus. It included sessions on “Learning the History and Origins of the Mid-Autumn Festival,” “Tasting Traditional Mid-Autumn Delicacies,” and a ” Calligraphy Workshop” designed for international students. Through these immersive experiences, cultural barriers were broken down, allowing participants not only to “learn about” the festival but also to “feel” the warmth and appeal of Chinese culture. The activities effectively promoted multicultural interaction and mutual understanding.
