he University of Saint Joseph (USJ) conducted a landmark visit to Beijing from 28 to 30 October, 2024, led by Dr. Teresa Loong, Vice-Rector for Student Life. This marked the first face-to-face engagement with the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE), Beijing Jiaotong University, and Gengdan Institute.

A delegation from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), led by Vice-Rector for Student Life, Dr. Teresa Loong, recently visited the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE), Beijing Jiaotong University, and Gengdan Institute in Beijing. This was the first visit by a senior USJ official to these institutions.

The USJ delegation included Prof. Nuno Soares, Head of the Department of Architecture and Design; Prof. Sérgio Gomes, Head of the Department of Business Administration; Prof. Karen Tagulao, Chair of the USJ Green Committee; along with Ben Lei from the Domestic Student Recruitment Office, Dr. Morse Lei, a USJ alumnus, and Glen Liu, a second-year master’s student in Environmental Science and Management.

During the visit at CSCSE, the USJ delegation discussed the experiences of USJ students from Mainland China and looked into how their academic credentials are evaluated. Both sides expressed a desire to work together to support USJ students and alumni. The meeting featured representatives from CSCSE, including Miss Qin Lan, Director of the Overseas Academic Credential Evaluation Office 1, and Miss Xie Jin, Team Leader, among others.

At Beijing Jiaotong University, the USJ team met with Prof. Song Fei, Director of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs, and three Associate Deans from the School of Economics and Management, School of Architecture and Design, and School of Environment, and two more staff members from the Prof. Song’s Office. Potential areas of collaboration were identified, encompassing student and faculty exchanges, curriculum development, student recruitment, Sino-Lusophone cooperation, Portuguese language study, and the organisation of international conferences.

The delegation also visited the Gengdan Institute, where they were warmly welcomed by the institute’s leadership and faculty led by Assistant President Mr. Tian Ye. The USJ team also conducted an informative session for around 70 undergraduate students, introducing USJ and its postgraduate programmes.

This visit to the three institutions in Beijing highlights USJ’s ongoing efforts to build connections and encourage exchanges between students and faculty. By fostering these relationships, USJ aims to create more opportunities for learning and collaboration that benefit both its community and those in Mainland China.
