University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao Strengthens Ties with Brazilian Institutions: State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), University of São Paulo – USP China Center,  Federal University of Brasília (UnB) and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) with the signing of MoUs.

From 8th to 17th October, 2025, during a visit to Brazil organized by the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) and led by its Deputy Director, Mr. Teng Sio Hong, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) officially signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the Federal University of Brasília (UnB). This marks a significant advancement in academic collaboration between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.

These agreements establish a framework for student and faculty exchanges, joint research initiatives, and collaborative academic development. The partnerships reflect a shared commitment to fostering international cooperation in higher education and promoting cross-cultural learning.

USJ has renewed its collaboration framework with UNICAMP, with active engagement from USJ’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Doctoral School. These academic units are now working closely with their counterparts at UNICAMP to develop interdisciplinary programmes, promote mobility opportunities, and support joint scholarly projects.

Meanwhile, USJ has entered into a new collaboration framework with UnB to create new opportunities for academic cooperation in areas such as staff and student exchanges, supervision of dissertations, cotutelle of doctoral theses, and joint academic projects and other projects of reciprocal interest.

Vice-Rector Prof. João Alexandre Lobo representing USJ during the signing ceremonies and expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “UNICAMP and UnB, both Brazil’s most respected universities, and we are proud to deepen our ties through meaningful academic exchange. These collaboration opens new pathways for our students and researchers to engage globally and contribute to shared knowledge.”

During the visit to University of São Paulo China Center (USP China Center), the Vice-Rector João Alexandre Lobo, shared the existing active collaboration between USJ’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, through the MoU signed in September 2022, and the Doctoral School, through the MoU signed in July of the present year, both with the Escola de Comunicações e Artes (ECA). The Vice-Rector toke the opportunity to explore possibility of expanding USJ collaboration with the USP China Center in the area of academic research  and other areas of reciprocal interest.

Throughout on visits, USJ also participated in the meeting with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) aiming for future academic collaboration in areas of common interest.

These collaborations align with USJ’s broader mission to expand its international academic network and support the development of bilingual and interdisciplinary talent, particularly in Portuguese-speaking regions. They also reinforce Macao’s strategic role in connecting China with Lusophone countries through education and innovation. And yet, leveraging the strengths of each partner, the network aims to create transformative educational experiences and generate impactful research outcomes.

This milestone underscores the growing educational ties between Brazil and Macao and sets the stage for future initiatives that will benefit all concerned institutions and their academic communities.
