The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) marked the conclusion of its participation in the 45th Green Week 2026 with a hands-on mangrove planting initiative – an activity that follows the university’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the restoration of coastal ecosystems.

On 8 March, USJ staff and students joined the annual Mangrove Planting Activity organised by the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) as part of the 45th Green Week 2026 . The initiative supports the expansion and conservation of local mangrove habitats, critical ecosystems that help maintain ecological balance and strengthen coastal resilience.

Bringing together members of the university community, the activity fostered environmental awareness and encouraged sustainable practices through direct engagement. Participation was coordinated by the Mangroves team of USJ’s Institute of Science and Environment (ISE), with additional support from the Drop by Drop project.

During the event, volunteers planted saplings of Aegiceras corniculatum and Kandelia obovata, two native mangrove species vital for shoreline protection and biodiversity. Mangroves play a crucial role in mitigating coastal erosion, buffering the impacts of extreme weather, supporting diverse wildlife habitats, improving water quality, and capturing carbon—making them an essential ally in climate action.

As a consistent participant in this annual initiative, USJ continues to demonstrate its dedication to ecological conservation and community engagement. The University extends its sincere appreciation to the Municipal Affairs Bureau for its continued collaboration, as well as to the students and staff whose contributions ensured the activity’s success.

Through initiatives like this, USJ remains committed to strengthening the connection between people and nature, while contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for Macao.
