The exhibition “Iconic Artistry: The Terminal’s Icon”, a collaborative project between the USFaculty of Arts and Humanities at USJ, the Macao International Airport Company Limited, and the Architectural Heritage Information System of Portugal, was inaugurated showcasing the creative journey of renowned Portuguese artist Eduardo Nery and his monumental tile panel at the Macao airport terminal.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Macao International Airport (MIA), the exhibition “Iconic Artistry: The Terminal’s Icon” was inaugurated showcasing the creative journey of renowned Portuguese artist Eduardo Nery and his monumental tile panel adorning the airport terminal. The inauguration ceremony took place on 12 November 2025.
The exhibition is the result of a collaborative initiative between the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), the Macao International Airport Company Limited (CAM) and the Architectural Heritage Information System of Portugal (SIPA-Sistema de Informação para o Património Arquitetónico).
Through an extensive selection of sketches, serigraph proofs, colour studies and photographic documentation gathered from over 380 archival materials in total, it showcases the creative process behind Nery’s final masterpiece: a 200-metre-long ceramic work comprising more than 20,000 tiles.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Carlos Sena Caires, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, highlighted the significance of this collaboration and recalled words first spoken at the 2024 exhibition at the University of Saint Joseph: “We hoped this exploration would not be limited to that exhibition”. He noted that this vision has now been fulfilled, as the exhibition reaches its rightful home at the Macao International Airport, where art, architecture, and public space converge to inspire travellers and celebrate Macao’s cultural identity.
