Public Lecture: We are Geographers! The Power of Spatial Data Infrastructures and (un)Volunteered Geography Information by ISE on 17th May 2016

ABOUT THE TALK

Territory has always been, and for sure will be, a key asset for mankind. Since remote times man tried to understand how to take most advantages (defense, nourishing, leisure, etc) from what surrounded him. We all are Geographers!

At the same time, territory is a man-made product reflecting decisions and actions taken. The increasing pace of society change and its complexification led to situations where man did not had that ability to foreseen the consequence of its actions. Missing or inaccurate data can partially explain it.

In the last decade technology evolution enable the establishment of new support decision tools and also a cultural change regarding geographic data.

This lecture will address the importance and increasing power of (un)Volunteered Geographic Information and Spatial Data Infrastructures, as new paradigms to produce, manage and explore spatial data towards decision support.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

PhD in Geography and Regional Planning – New Technologies in Geography, Assistant Professor and head of Geography and Regional Planning Department at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and researcher at CICS.NOVA – Interdisciplinary Centre for Social Sciences, coordinating the research group on socio-spatial modelling and planning.

Main research and competencies are in the field of Geographic Information Science and Systems, namely spatial data modelling, Geocomputation, Spatial Data Infrastructures, Cadastre, and GIS in organizations.
