The Department of Architecture and Design of USJ/FAH proudly presents the Graduation Show 2024 – “CITY MAKERS” – held from 24 June to 31 July at the Kent Wong Gallery – Basement.

The Department of Architecture and Design of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) proudly presents CITY MAKERS, the 2025 Bachelor Graduation Show, showcasing the creative and forward-thinking work of this year’s graduating cohort in Architecture and Design.

This year’s exhibition offers an inspiring glimpse into the future of Macao through the lens of the city’s emerging talent. The capstone projects on display are far more than academic exercises—they are bold, thoughtful responses to the complex cultural, environmental, and social dimensions that define urban life in Macao today.

At the heart of the exhibition is the concept of the City Maker: a new generation of architects and designers who see their role as more than creating buildings or products—they are active contributors to community, culture, and transformation. Their work addresses urgent issues including ecological sustainabilitycultural preservationsocial equity, and urban revitalisation, offering place-sensitive, visionary ideas for a more liveable and inclusive Macao.

As the city celebrates its designation as Culture City of East Asia 2025CITY MAKERS underscores the power of design to shape public awareness and support community empowerment. The exhibition invites the public to engage with projects driven by care, curiosity, and a strong sense of responsibility toward the city’s shared future.

CITY MAKERS is both a celebration of new creative voices and a call to action, reminding us that design is not only about form or function, but about shaping how we live together. In doing so, it invites us all to see ourselves as City Makers.

Graduation Exhibition of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies:

Building a Green Island Community

Building a Green Island Community showcases the final-year projects of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies students at the University of Saint Joseph. Set within the North-1 zone of Macao’s new Masterplan, the projects envision a sustainable, community-focused future for the city.

Working within a shared urban context, students developed diverse architectural proposals—from civic and cultural buildings to mixed-use developments. Each design addresses real urban needs while balancing environmental performance, cultural relevance, and regulatory feasibility.

As part of the broader CITY MAKERS exhibition, these projects reflect a strong commitment to shaping Macao’s urban future through thoughtful, place-based architecture. Grounded in research and driven by imagination, they show how emerging architects can contribute to building inclusive, resilient communities—and take an active role as City Makers.

Graduation Exhibition of the Bachelor of Design:

Designing for Empowering

Designing for Empowering presents the capstone projects of the Bachelor of Design students at the University of Saint Joseph. Developed within the framework of the People’s Living Lab, the works explore how design can respond to societal challenges through innovation that empowers individuals and communities.

Spanning product, furniture, and graphic design, the projects tackle themes such as accessibility, sustainability, social inclusion, and cultural identity. With five years remaining to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the exhibition highlights design’s potential to drive meaningful change in everyday life and future urban development.

As part of CITY MAKERS, this exhibition positions designers as critical thinkers and change agents—people who design not only for aesthetics, but for impact. It invites the public to reimagine design as a tool for building a more equitable, liveable, and human-centred Macao.
