The Department of Architecture and Design is hosting its workshops series 2024/2025: Cartoon Drawing Workshop by António on 11 – 12 December, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus.
About the Workshop:
In this workshop, we will delve into the professional and artistic journey of cartoonist António, exploring the foundations needed to improve drawing skills. Even those without any prior experience can jump right in and grasp the key concepts needed to excel in cartoon drawing.
The aim is to inspire participants to enhance their creativity and use drawing as a powerful tool for generating new ideas. Participants will progress through different stages of the workshop, starting from simple shapes and gradually moving towards more intricate drawings after grasping the fundamental concepts.
The workshop has two sessions and will cover basic drawing principles, fundamental constructions, and various methods used in drawing:
- Session I Fundamental concepts of design
- Session II Character Creation
About the Tutor:
António (António Moreira Antunes) is a Portuguese cartoonist and caricaturist born on 12th April 1953, in Vila Franca de Xira. António started is activity as a cartoonist in 1974 in the newspaper República, and in that same year he began his long collaboration with the weekly Expresso. He’s currently the curator of Cartoon Xira and director of the World Press Cartoon.
Among the awards received, the following stand out: Grand Prize at the XX International Salon of Cartoons (Montreal, 1983), 1st Editorial Cartoon Award from the XXIII International Salon of Cartoons (Montreal, 1986), Gazeta Cartoon Award (Lisbon, 1992), Grand Prize of Honor at the XV Festival du Dessin Humoristique (Anglet, 1993), Excellence Award Best Newspaper Design, SND (Stockholm, 1995), Premio Internazionale Satira Politica (ex-aequo, Forte dei Marmi, 2002), Stuart Carvalhais Grand Prix (Lisbon, 2005), Prix Presse Internationale (Saint-Just-le-Martel, 2010), Gazeta Merit Award (Lisbon, 2018).
Besides Expresso, António has published works in periodicals as diverse as Vida Mundial, Diário de Notícias, A Capital (1976), Diário Popular and Mundial (1996), besides collaborating with RTP and Lisbon City Hall.
He has published several books and held various solo exhibitions in Portugal, Brazil, Germany, Spain and France.
