Department of Science and Environment participates at the 12th World Sustainability Forum

Prof. Thomas Lei, from the Department of Science and Environment (DSE), Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, has given an oral presentation of his latest research at the 12th World Sustainability Forum (WSF-12) in Hong Kong.

From 21 to 24 August 2026, Prof. Thomas Lei, from the Department of Science and Environment (DSE), Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences (FHES) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), has given an oral presentation of his latest research at the 12th World Sustainability Forum (WSF-12) in Hong Kong. His research aligns with one of the conference themes, Emerging Technologies and Integrated Solutions for Sustainable, Resilient Cities and Planet.

The title of his presentation, “A Comparative Assessment of Heavy Metals in Outdoor and Indoor Dust and Its Implications for Sustainable Development in Macao”, explores the heavy metal contents from the dust collected in different outdoor and indoor environments in Macao, which is further analyzed to assess the potential health risks for the local community.    

The WSF-12 conference is the 12th edition of this conference series, previously held in cities and regions across the world, including in Basel, Cape Town, Beijing, Singapore, Toronto, and Barcelona. The WSF-12 conference, organized by Sustainability MDPI and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was a great success, with over 300 participants attending. 

In a time of rapid climate change, increasingly frequent extreme weather events, and growing resource constraints, the need for integrated, scalable solutions has never been greater. Therefore, WSF-12 brought together global leaders, researchers, and innovators to bridge science, policy, and society, fostering integrated solutions and collaborative partnerships that accelerate the transition from vision to action for a resilient and sustainable future.
