The School of Education of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and Kao Yip Middle School held an enriching cultural exchange event on 12 December, fostering deeper connections between local secondary school students and our university community. Guided by Assistant Professor Iris Mak and Assistant Professor Wenmin Zhao, the event saw enthusiastic involvement from 23 student representatives from USJ, alongside over 70 participants from Kao Yip.
Promoting Sino-Western cultural exchange and broadening international perspectives among participants, the event brought together students from Kao Yip Middle School and USJ, creating a vibrant platform for sharing traditions, arts, and insights from diverse backgrounds. Participants from USJ introduced and displayed hand-drawn totems inspired by Brazilian indigenous art, offering a fascinating glimpse into native symbolism and craftsmanship. Additionally, an exhibition of traditional Philippine costumes highlighted the rich textile heritage and cultural significance of the traditions. Whereas, students from Kao Yip led hands-on workshops teaching Chinese calligraphy and paper cutting, allowing USJ attendees to experience the elegance and precision of these ancient art forms firsthand. The activities encouraged active participation, sparking lively discussions and collaborative learning experiences that bridged Eastern and Western cultures. This successful collaboration underscores USJ’s commitment to cultural diversity and global awareness.
