Under a collaborative agreement signed between the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao and the Sheng Kung Hui (SKH), and followed by the success of the project’s Part One and Part Two on Basic and Principles of Qualitative Research”, Dr Edward Kwan, Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychology and the Department’s Qualitative Research (QLR) Training Team, offered the third stage of consultancy service to the SKH qualitative research team by providing the “Part Three Training on Qualitative Data Analysis” on February 3, at the Don Bosco Auditorium in USJ Ilha Verde Campus

The USJ training team, led by Dr Kwan, consisted of PhD and Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MCP) students who also use qualitative approaches in their own research. During the training, Dr Kwan selected some of the raw data and coding, and themes developed by the SKH’s research team for discussion and experiences sharing.

The Part Three QLR Training was well attended by SKH staff who have almost finished all data collection and analysis for the qualitative research to explore the experiences of family members of problem gamblers in Macao. Some USJ students of the Bachelor in Psychology (BPY) and Master of Counseling and Psychotherapy (MCP) programmes had also attend the training. Dr Kwan has also shared his advice on issues related to publication of the SKH’s study findings.

Feedback from the SKH staff indicated that they found the training very useful in enhancing their confidence in developing themes from their analysis. USJ students revealed that the training had deepen their interests in conducting qualitative research for their dissertations.
