On the 26 February 2025, a delegation from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao visited Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) to discuss potential collaborations, particularly in the field of product design. The visit aimed to strengthen the ties between the two institutions and explore opportunities for academic and research partnerships.

The USJ delegation was led by Professor Stephen Morgan, Rector of USJ, and included Dr. Teresa Loong, Vice-Rector for Student Life; Prof. Nuno Soares, Head of the Department of Architecture and Design; Mr. Ben Lei, Head of Domestic Student Recruitment Office; and Mr. David Yang, Head of the Institutional Development Office. They were warmly received by Professor Qiu Xueqing, President of Guangdong University of Technology, along with Ms. Huang Rong, Director of the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs Office, and Mr. Luo Shengjing, Party Secretary of the School of Art and Design.

President Qiu Xueqing and Rector Stephen Morgan expressed their shared enthusiasm for fostering a collaborative relationship between the two universities. The discussions focused on potential areas of cooperation, with a particular emphasis on product design. Both parties reached a preliminary consensus to use product design as a starting point for further exploration of collaborative models and pathways. To solidify their commitment, the two leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and exchanged gifts as a symbol of their partnership.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited GDUT’s Dongfeng Road campus, where they toured the Guangdong International Advanced Design Center and the laboratories of the School of Art and Design. They also engaged in a roundtable discussion with the leadership of the School of Art and Design. The visit provided the USJ delegation with a deeper understanding of GDUT’s research capabilities and talent development in product design, further reinforcing their confidence in pursuing collaborative initiatives.

This visit represents the establishment of a formal partnership between the University of Saint Joseph and Guangdong University of Technology. Both institutions expressed their commitment to leveraging this opportunity to enhance communication, explore practical collaborations in product design and other fields, and achieve mutual benefits.
