The Social Work Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences organized a unique pre-graduation career development gathering for soon-to-be graduates recently. The activity was sponsored by the Macao Foundation and co-organized by the Office for Students and Alumni Affairs.
The session featured alumna Ms. Summer Cheang, a professional social worker with 14 years of experience, who shared her career journey and valuable advice for future social workers. Additionally, the event welcomed Ms. Lam, a member of the hearing-impaired community, who shared her personal experiences with social workers, adding warmth and depth to the occasion.
Summer recounted her growth from student to seasoned social worker, offering insights into the profession’s demands. She discussed how to navigate challenges, maintain dedication amidst difficulties, and strike a work-life balance. Emphasizing the vocation’s profound sense of purpose, she highlighted the need for continuous learning and conviction to realize self value while serving others.
A standout moment was the heartfelt sharing by Ms. Lam, who expressed gratitude for the impact of social work services on her life. Her personal stories gave students a deeper understanding of how their future roles could tangibly transform lives, inspiring them to uphold a service-oriented mindset.
The event was met with enthusiastic participation, as students actively engaged with the speakers through questions and discussions, gaining invaluable insights. Many remarked that the session not only clarified their career path but also strengthened their confidence and anticipation for becoming professional social workers.
This event equipped graduates with practical knowledge and also reflected the university’s holistic approach to student development. We believe these future social workers will carry forward this passion and mission to foster greater care and change in society.
