The Public Lecture “From Research to Revolution: Media, Artivism, and the Power to Transform” will take place on 19 February, from 6:30 – 8PM, in Don Bosco Auditorium (Ilha Verde Campus).
How do media, research, and activism intersect to propel societal transformation? What is the role of media outlets, including documentaries and podcasts, in amplifying the impact of research projects? Can creativity emerge as a transformative tool in the realm of artivism, shaping narratives for a greater cause? Do media channels hold the potential to truly change the world? These compelling questions will be at the forefront of this public lecture, framed within the context of the FEMglocal research project, which aims to contribute to the recovery of the historical memory of Portuguese feminisms and address the prevalent social invisibility experienced by feminist movements within the national territory.
Join screenwriter and researcher Ana Sofia Pereira and journalist, director, and researcher Vanessa Ribeiro Rodrigues as they engage in a dynamic conversation about the creative media strategies employed in disseminating scientific concepts. Drawing inspiration from their collaborative work on the FEMglocal project, where they contribute to the production of a documentary and a podcast, the discussion will cast light on the history and struggles of Portuguese feminist movements, emphasizing often-overlooked aspects of their narratives.

About the Speaker:
Ana Sofia Pereira is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the research project “FEMglocal – Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions” (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021 / DOI 10.54499/PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021). In 2020 she completed a European PhD in Communication Sciences (majoring in Cinema, Screenwriting) at the New University of Lisbon, with a stay at the University of Reading, on the lack of women screenwriters and directors in Europe and specifically in Portugal. In 2020 and 2022, she was one of the winners of the Support Program for Writing and Developing Audiovisual and Multimedia Works promoted by ICA. She is a higher education professor, integrated researcher at CICANT, screenwriter, and script doctor.
Vanessa Ribeiro Rodrigues is a documentarian, integrated researcher at CICANT, independent journalist, university professor and educator in Media Literacy and Journalism. Holds a Phd in Communication for Development (majoring in Documentary Journalism). She is a researcher at FEMglocal, where she also coordinates the podcast. As a film director, she has in post-production the documentary “The Sand Spellbound” (Real Ficção & Sabina Filmes), shot in Mozambique with ICA support. In the past, she lived in Jordan and in Brazil as a foreign correspondent for radio TSF and Diário de Notícias. She is the author of “Ala Feminina” (Desassossego, 2018), a book about women in prison.
