Materiality, beyond the norm

The USJ Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) announces its 2024-2025 Lecture Series: Materiality, Beyond the Norm. This series invites students, architects, designers, and the broader community to engage in open dialogue with leading practitioners who are redefining the boundaries of architecture and design. As the world grapples with significant challenges, this lecture series will explore how innovative approaches to materiality can reshape our built environment. By focusing on the intersection of form, function, and substance, the lectures will inspire critical thinking and encourage unconventional design solutions.

DAD is committed to fostering a culture of experimentation and innovation. At USJ, we aim to showcase the work of visionary studios and stimulate conversations that push the boundaries of traditional architectural and design practices. Join us for a series of thought-provoking lectures that will ignite your creativity.

About the Talk:

Starting from the unauthorized use of a book title—in this case, “The Medium is the Message” by Marshall McLuhan—this conference aims to discuss the importance of process and materialization in design practice. Drawing on examples from his studio work, André Cruz will delve into the less visible side of design projects as well as his journey and professional practice.

About the Speaker:

André Cruz holds a degree in Communication Design from ESAD – Matosinhos. After eight years as co-founder and art director of Studio Dobra, he launched andrecruz.studio at the beginning of 2022. andrecruz.studio is an award-winning studio—Red Dot Award 2022, International Society of Typographic Designers, among others—is based in Porto and is notably recognized in the cultural sector.

André Cruz’s career includes key roles with ExperimentaDesign in 2005, the Drop studio in 2006, and collaboration with Stefan Sagmeister on the graphic identity of Casa da Música – Porto, where he served as designer and art director from 2007 to 2018. His strong connection with music allowed him to design numerous album covers and visual identities for festivals such as Paredes de Coura and Primavera Sound (Barcelona and Porto).

He was a guest assistant professor at ESMAD – Polytechnic of Porto and is currently a lecturer in the Master’s in Communication Design at ESAD – Matosinhos, as well as at the Porto Design Summer School.
