Ale Ruaro in Macau | Book Launch and Conversation about Photography

24

Nov

On 24 and 25 November, Macao will host the renowned Brazilian photographer Ale Ruaro at the Livraria Portuguesa, supported by USJ Macao.

About the author:

Ale Ruaro

A photographer since 1995, Ale Ruaro has dedicated himself almost exclusively to portraits in recent years. Always in black and white, his images are constructed, above all, in partnership with his subjects, creating a harmony between the recorded face and the light that caresses it. Ale’s photographs are characterized by their contrasting and dense lighting, one of their most striking features, giving the faces contours reminiscent of Dutch painters like Vermeer and Rembrandt. Ale photographs people of his time with the soft, loving, and empathetic gaze of a 17th-century artist.

Event Details:

The program includes two events in the Livraria Portuguesa, open to the public with free admission:

Book Launch of “Vestígios” on 24 November at 6:00 PM. Ale Ruaro will present his latest book. The book explores the concept of expanded photography, which transcends conventional representation and dialogues with other languages, subverting the viewer’s expectations and provoking reflection instead of offering easy answers. The work represents 21 years of deconstruction of Ale’s photographic language, through which he sought to develop an authentic voice free from commercial pressures. “Vestígios” is described as “noisy” and “dissonant,” containing dense and undefined images that reflect the author’s loves and anxieties. Published by Selo Vertigem, the work exemplifies the idea that art is the exercise of freedom and that every act of creation involves destroying the established to build the new. Ale’s photography dismantles traditional references, challenging the public to question their perceptions and relate to the images in an innovative way.

Conversation with the artist on 25 November at 6:00 PM. The photographer will participate in a conversation about his career and the creative process behind his works. This interaction promises to deepen the understanding of photography as an art form, especially in a world where the image has often become superficial.

The events are organized by the Halftone Photography Association and the Livraria Portuguesa, with the support of the Fundação Oriente and COM Viagens, and the institutional collaborations of the Consulate of Brazil in Hong Kong and Macau, the Guimarães Rosa Lectorship, and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Saint Joseph.
