The School of Education and Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education are hosting a Public Lecture “Introduction to Publishing in Education Journals: Processes, Metrics, and Standards” on 24 September, from 17:00 – 18:00, in the Conference Room.
INTRODUCTION:
For students and early-career researchers who are new to academic publishing, choosing an appropriate journal, understanding journal metrics such as impact factors and quartile rankings, knowing what happens to a manuscript after submission, and understanding the respective roles of authors, editors, and reviewers are all important aspects of the publication process.
Using academic publishing in the field of education as its main context, this seminar will introduce major journal indexing systems, including Web of Science and Scopus, as well as basic concepts related to commonly used journal evaluation indicators such as impact factors and journal quartile rankings. Building on this foundation, the lecture will follow the complete journey of a manuscript—from journal selection and submission to editorial screening, peer review, revision, and final publication—and explain the different roles of authors, editors, and reviewers in the academic publishing process.
The lecture will also introduce common academic publishing models and related basic concepts, and discuss authorship, submission requirements, publication ethics, as well as common risks and issues that first-time authors should be aware of, including predatory journals and unreliable publication invitations. The lecture aims to provide participants who are interested in publishing in education journals with a basic understanding of academic publishing and to offer a foundation for future journal selection, manuscript submission, and publication planning.
