The University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) Faculty of Business and Law has launched a new Master of Business and Technology Law (MBTL) with classes scheduled to start in September 2026. The MBTL is a two-year, 60-credit programme with two specialisation options: Banking and Finance Law, or Technology Law. The curriculum comprises nine general modules and three specialization modules, culminating in a capstone project for each specialization.
This new master programme responds to a growing demand for professionals with specialised cross-disciplinary skills in business and law, and in technology and law, both in Macao and internationally. Locally, Macao has been engaged in an effort of diversification from a gaming-dominated economy. In such an effort, according to government policy, two of the priority areas are those of “Modern Finance” and “Cutting-edge Technology”. On the other hand, more globally, rapid technological developments, such as those in artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies have created major disruptions to businesses and serious challenges to the law and regulations. As a consequence, businesses and laws are in a process of transformation across the globe. To adequately deal with these disruptions, high-quality professionals with cross-cutting competencies in banking, finance, technology and law are urgently necessary. Thus, the Master of Business and Technology Law is timely and necessary and responds to a crucial need in the market.
Students of the programme will have a common foundation with the following general modules: Introduction to China and Macau Legal Systems, Regulating New Technologies, Contract Law and Technology, E-commerce Law, Taxation in Digital Economy, Banking, Finance and Securities Law, Data Protection and Privacy, Gaming Law and Emerging Technologies, and Legal Research Methods.
The Specialisation in Banking and Finance Law includes the following specialisation modules: Fintech Law, Banking and Insurance Contracts, and Financial Crimes Management. The Specialisation in Technology Law includes the following modules: Cybersecurity Law and Policy, Digital Forensics Law, and Intellectual Property Rights and Technology. Both specialisations include a Capstone Project in which students may, inter alia, conduct applied legal research, design policy briefs, or engage in legal technology building.
