USJ Welcomes Delegation from De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde

A delegation from the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) of the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde (DLSCSB) visited the University of Saint Joseph to discuss collaborative initiatives in inclusive education, in particular on support to the deaf.



A delegation from the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies (SDEAS) of the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde (DLSCSB) visited the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao on 18 March to discuss collaborative initiatives in inclusive education, in particular on support to the deaf. 

The delegation was cordially welcomed by Prof. Isabel Tchiang, Dean of the School of Education at USJ, alongside Prof. Frances Lee, Master of Education programme Coordinator. To provide a comprehensive overview of local deaf-support practices, USJ also invited representatives from its local school partner, Colégio Diocesano de São José 5 (CDSJ5), to introduce their specialised Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment Education Programme (SLCO).

The discussions highlighted the importance of social awareness, the importance of having deaf role models, as well as providing students with natural bilingual learning environment. The representatives from CDSJ5 includes teachers from the Student Support Team – Mr. Hugo Chan, Vice Dean, Ms. Sisley Lao, Team Leader, and Ms. Gina Lei, Team Leader and SLCO Programme Lead Officer. They shared insights into their institutional support for deaf students and their parents.

The visiting delegation from De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde included: Dr. Marian Patricia Bea Francisco, Dean of the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies; Ms. Bernadette Infanta, Faculty of the Sign Language Interpretation Program and Administrator of the Filipino Sign Language Learning Program; Ms. Ma. Nery Balatay, Deaf Employment Coordinator; and Mr. William Sidayon, Jr., Social Responsibility and Outreach Program Coordinator.
