GOAL is a successful example of international, cross-institutional, and interdisciplinary collaboration, focusing on three key areas: International Cooperation, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Student Opportunities.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao is a partner in the Global Outreach through Action and Leadership (GOAL) project, alongside Christ University in India, Coastal Carolina University in the USA, Shih Chien University in Taiwan ROC, and Universidad del Desarrollo in Chile. The project is led by Hochschule Mainz – University of Applied Sciences, Germany.

GOAL is a successful example of international, cross-institutional, and interdisciplinary collaboration, focusing on three key areas: International Cooperation, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Student Opportunities. Through scholarships and study abroad programmes, the initiative enables students to explore the SDGs while engaging in academic and cultural exchange between Hochschule Mainz with its partners.

The project is structured around a series of activities. From November 16 to 23, 2025, USJ welcomed the first group of German students from the Green Finance programme at Hochschule Mainz’s School of Business. The delegation was warmly welcomed by USJ’s Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Academic Affairs, Prof. Álvaro Barbosa.

During their stay, the students and faculty engaged in a dynamic programme of visits and learning experiences, beginning with a behind-the-scenes tour of The Venetian Macao, where they explored non-gaming areas such as back-of-house operations, training facilities, hotels, and shopping malls, gaining valuable insights into the company’s responsible gaming initiatives and broader commitment to social responsibility. Their itinerary also included a visit to the Macau Carbon Exchange (MEF) to learn about regional efforts in carbon trading and sustainability, attendance at the public lecture “Green Finance: EU Frameworks and Asian Opportunities” organised by the USJ Sustainable Business Lab, Faculty of Business and Law with support from Hochschule Mainz, and an exploration of Macao’s Creative Industries in Coloane, which offered a cultural perspective on innovation and entrepreneurship.

Looking ahead, from December 2 to 13, 2025, USJ will host another group of students from Hochschule Mainz’s Design programme. They will participate in the workshop Cutting the Screens”, which will address themes of the intersection of robotic fabrication, interactive systems, and video mapping, further strengthening the interdisciplinary scope of the GOAL project.

Through these initiatives, the GOAL project demonstrates the transformative power of international collaboration in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), enriching student learning, and fostering meaningful connections across cultures and disciplines. While the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) continues to place Macao as a vibrant hub for academic study, research, and innovation, while fostering talent development and inspiring future leaders to engage with the city’s unique opportunities.
