DesignEd Asia 2014 – the leading conference for design education in this region.

On 2–3 December 2014, Prof Thomas Daniell participated in DesignEd Asia 2014, the leading conference for design education in this region. Held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, it attracts hundreds of international design educators, design researchers, practicing designers, and design students. This was the tenth annual conference, jointly presented by the Hong Kong PolyU School of Design, Hong Kong Design Institute, and Hong Kong Design Centre. The theme was “ACTION! – DoingDesign Education.” The invited papers focused on methods of teaching and learning that transcend traditional “classroom” and “studio” modes. As the first participation at a DesignEd Asia conference by a faculty member from USJ, Prof Daniell’s presentation was about the temporary bamboo pavilions built by third-year architecture students. The students collectively design the pavilion using physical models, digital models, and full-scale prototypes, then spend one week at the end of the semester assembling the pavilion on site. This provides the students with an intensive experience in form, space, material, detail, scale, collaboration, and time management. Perfectly suited to the theme of the conference, Prof Daniell’s presentation showcased the innovative pedagogical methods and the creative work of our architecture students to an international audience.
