Doctoral Programmes
The USJ Doctoral School offers a doctoral programme that is a research-oriented degree aimed at developing advanced theoretical and practical research skills in a specific area of knowledge. Doctoral candidates complete main modules in research methods and foundation knowledge in their proposed research field (1 Year) and then work with a supervisor to complete their doctoral thesis (2 to 4 Years).
Doctoral candidates are expected to develop original scientific work that contributes to a significant theoretical advance in the field. The doctoral programme’s main objective is to prepare highly qualified professionals capable of developing R&D activities in private and public organisations or to develop an academic career.
The first cohort of the USJ doctoral programme at USJ started their journey in 2007, and since then, a focus on research excellence has been part of the University’s academic Life. The USJ doctoral programme has graduated more than 40 students, and all doctoral theses concluded since 2011 are publicly available on the Doctoral Thesis page.

Adérito Fernandes Marcos
Dean of the Doctoral School | Professor | Coordinator for the Doctoral Programme of the Doctoral School | Acting Research Coordinator for the Doctoral School
Born in Mozambique in 1968, graduated in Computer Engineering from the Nova University of Lisbon (1992); holds a PhD summa cum laude in Computer Graphics from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany (1997); and Habilitation in Technology and Information Systems from the University of Minho (UM), Portugal (2008). In 2019, he was awarded the honorific professor honoris causa from UNIVEM, São Paulo, Brazil. He is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Dean of the Doctoral School of the University of Saint Joseph, Macao, China. He started his university career in Germany as a guest assistant at the Technical University of Darmstadt (1992). He was Assist. Prof. at the University of Minho (2000-2009), where he was a mentor, co-founder and professor of the Master of Computer Graphics and Virtual Environments and Master of Technology and Digital Art (Director from 2007-2009). He has been the Executive Director of the Computer Graphics Centre (CCG), an Interface Institute for Applied Research (1997–2005) in close collaboration with the University of Minho. In this position, he coordinated more than 30 Research & Development projects totalling more than 6 million euros. Some of the project's results were pioneers in Portugal. They represented a step forward in the technology transfer of computer graphics and virtual reality (e.g. Virtual Oceanarium for the World Expo 1998). On behalf of CCG, he received the European IST Prize 2000: Grand Prize Winner for the TeleInViVo project and the LAVAL Virtual 2002 – "Science et education" and "GRAND PRIX DU JURY 2002", by the Laval Academy, Mayenne França, for the European project ARCHEOGUIDE. He was a Full Professor (Professor Catedrático) at Portuguese Open University, where he was the dean of the Department (faculty equivalent) of Sciences and Technology (2010-2012) and president of the Univ. Scientific Council (2015-2019) and founder and first director of the University Pole of the Research Centre for Arts and Communication (2014-2020). He designed several graduation, master's, and doctoral programs, conceived to run in open distance learning mode; as such, they were innovative programs, with particular emphasis on the Doctoral Program in Digital Media Arts, a joint project with the University of Algarve. He successfully supervised four post-doctoral, nine PhD and two dozen master's candidates. He is the president of Artech-International, an association for computer, digital, and media arts with activities worldwide. He is an ACM, IEEE, and SIGGRAPH member and a regular scientific consultant for several international boards in Europe, Latin America, and Russia.Professor Adérito Fernandes-Marcos is a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals in areas such as computer graphics, arts, and design. Born in Portugal in 1979, he graduated in Communication Design at the University of Lisbon (2003), has a master’s degree in Communication Sciences at the New University of Lisbon (UNL, 2008), and has a PhD Digital Media: Audiovisuals and Interactive Media in an international Doctoral Program with the University of Texas and UNL (2014).He is an Assistant Professor at the Doctoral School of the University of Saint Joseph, Macao, China.He was a professor at Beira Interior University (2014-2020), Lusíada University (2015-2022), and IADE—European University (2020-2024), where he coordinated the Graduation Course in Visual Design and the Master’s in Communication and Multimedia, both in open distance learning modality. He collaborated as a Visiting Academic at the University of Saint Joseph, teaching several modules in the School of Education and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (2017-2024).He designed a graduation program in Visual Design at IADE (Licenciatura em Design Visual), conceived to run in open distance learning mode and collaborated on several others. He successfully supervised 14 master's candidates.He participated in several projects related to digital technologies, multimedia, and audiovisuals in education, adding up to over 20 years of experience in e-learning. The most recent projects he collaborated on were the educational project to support learning mathematics using Khan Academy (2019 to 2021) and the digital literacy project PICCLE, developed with Plano Nacional de Leitura (Reading National Plan, 2021).His research interests are broad in media production, but he is particularly interested in the educational uses of social media, multimedia, interactive media, communication technology and audiovisuals in education.

Exploring the intersection of emerging technologies, AI, and human behavior to shape the next generation of marketing. Dr. Lampo, as Head of the Department of Business Studies, leads the management and international development of two flagship programmes in the Faculty of Business and Law: the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA).His academic journey includes a Bachelor's degree from Norway's <a href="http://www.bi.no/en/" target="_blank">Handelshøyskolen BI</a>, an MBA, and a Doctoral degree completed summa cum laude from the University of Saint Joseph in Macao. An active contributor to his field, he has authored the book Promptly Yours and nearly 30 academic publications; several of these works have received international awards.He lends his expertise to leading institutions, helping to shape discourse in the discipline. He is the regional coordinator for <a href="http://www.agbrp.world/" target="_blank">AGBRP</a> (Academy for Global Business Research and Practice), participates in the <a href="https://newinti.edu.my/" target="_blank">INTI</a> International University & Colleges Fellowship program, and contributes to the Editorial Review Board for <a href="https://jgbrp.scholasticahq.com/" target="_blank"> JGBRP </a> (Journal of Global Business Research and Practice). David Gonçalves

I am a Biologist with interests in Animal Behavior and Environmental Sciences. My work has been focused on the mechanisms that allow for animals to adjust their behavior to changing conditions of the social environment ('behavioral plasticity'). In particular, I have been interested on the physiological, genomic and neuronal processes associated with behavioral change. More recently, I have been interested in understanding how pollutants may interfere with endocrine and neuronal systems to disrupt natural behaviours, using fish as study models. I concluded my PhD in 2002 in the University of Lisbon and afterwards received Post-Doctoral training at the Eco-Ethology Research Unit of ISPA-IU, also in Lisbon. I was Professor Auxiliar at ISPA-IU from 2003 until 2011, when I joined USJ. Ansoumane Douty DIAKITE is an Associate Professor at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in Macau, where he has held numerous academic leadership roles since 2009. He currently serves as Head of the Department of Law and Public Policy, Coordinator of the Macau Academy of Comparative Alternative Dispute Resolution, and oversees several graduate programs, including the Master of Community Development and the Master of Lusophone and Public International Law.Prof. DIAKITE holds a PhD in Government Studies from USJ and a Master’s in European, International, and Comparative Law from the University of Macau, with a research focus on international investment arbitration. His undergraduate studies were completed at the Sorbonne-affiliated Institut de Droit des Affaires Internationales (IDAI) in Cairo between 2002 and 2006.Beyond his academic degrees, he has pursued extensive professional training, earning certificates and diplomas in international law, arbitration, intellectual property, sustainable development, and management. These include a Graduate Studies Program certificate from the UN Office in Geneva (2007), diplomas in International Commercial Arbitration and Trade and Investment Law (2008, 2020), and a certificate in International Private Law from the Hague Academy. He also received training in Macau’s legal system, cyber resilience, and management from 2015 to 2020.Prof. DIAKITE’s contributions extend beyond academia. He co-founded the Association for the Promotion of African Business Law in Cairo in 2006 and served as President of the African Chamber of Commerce in Macau from 2015 to 2018. Filipa Martins

Filipa Martins, Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in Macao SAR. She teaches across interaction design, game design, visual communication, and the history and theory of art and design, aiming to connect past movements and methods with present-day practice. Filipa is also a postdoctoral researcher at the Tangible Music Lab at the University of Arts in Linz, where she studies design patterns for spatial audio interactions. She holds a PhD in Science and Technology of the Arts (Interactive Art) from the Catholic University of Portugal-Porto School of Arts, an MSc in Multimedia & Entertainment Technology from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University-School of Design, and a Bachelor's (Portuguese Licenciatura+5) in Communication Design from the University of Lisbon-Faculty of Fine Arts. At USJ, she has contributed to academic life as president of the Faculty Pedagogical Council and as a member of the University Senate and General Council, and she currently serves on the FAH Sustainable Development Goals Team and the Green Committee. Her professional experience spans Vietnam, Taiwan, Portugal, Hong Kong, China, and Macao in roles such as consultant, researcher, lecturer, project lead, design manager, and creative director, with projects ranging from branding and digital interactive products to game design and R&D. Recent work includes studies of Macao’s visual identity through patterns and textures, tangible interaction projects, and the use of mobile platforms in learning environments. She serves as a member of the IEEE (Macau Section), as a jury member for the A’ Design Award & Competition S.R.L., and on the scientific committees of ARTECH International, ARTEFACTo, DIGICOM, ROTURA, ICEC and China Daily. Dr. Lee has earned a PhD degree in Education in 2002. Her research has centered on how self-concept, motivation and other socio-cultural practices can influence and enhance children’s psychological development. Dr. Lee has published several papers exploring these topics from different perspectives and am currently working on consolidating this work and developing it into a book project.Because of her expertise, Dr. Lee has been invited to provide consultation and training for a number of groups and schools, worked with the community to advocate the needs of children. She has also been approached by the media to share viewpoints and experience on issues related to parenting, child development and special needs education.
Francisco Botelho

Born and raised in Macau, Dr. Francisco Botelho started his academic career at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in 2005, and is currently the Head of the Department of Social Work at USJ. He holds a PhD in Physiology from the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and a M.Sc in Neuroscience from the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. Dr. Francisco Botelho received the Best Young Investigator Award for 3 consecutive years (2012-2014) in international symposiums for his work in brain plasticity and GABAergic transmission, and was appointed as Honorary Assistant Professor at HKU in 2014. Currently, his attention focuses on the implementation of the biopsychosocial model in the healthcare system of Macau and the Greater Bay Area, in order to understand biological and psychosocial components of various disorders such as autism and devise effective treatments and therapies. He is Honorary Advisor of the Macau Society of Registered Psychotherapists, and member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Applied Psychology.

George Du registered for his doctoral studies at the University of Adelaide in 1996, then transferred his studies to the University of Queensland, finally earning his Ph.D. in Informatics from Adelaide University. He conducted Post-doctoral research in Computer Science at the Israel Institute of Technology (IIT). George Du was Chair Professor (2017-2021) and Founding Director of the Institute of Data Science (Now School of Data Sciences) at the City University of Macau (2017-2019) and Founding Director of the Macao Big Data Research Centre for Urban Governance (2017-2021). During his tenure at City University, Chair Professor Du created and taught Master’s and doctoral programs in Data Science and worked on advanced research projects with specialist teams and post-doctoral staff.Before joining City University, Professor Du Wencai served as the dean of the College of Information Science and Technology at Hainan University for 13 years. He was the first to propose the academic term "Maritime Communication" and initiated research in this field. In 2009, he led the approval of the first-level discipline of the PhD in Information and Communication Engineering by the Ministry of Education of China and served as the responsible professor. GERALD ESTADIEU is currently an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) - Macao. With a Master's Degree in Signal and Image Processing from the Université d’Orléans (France) and a PhD in Science and Technology of the Arts from the Catholic University of Portugal (School of Arts, Porto), his research and artistic activities focus on the fields of Interactivity, Soundscape, Spatial Audio and Ambisonics, as well as Hacking and Digital Fabrication. He created the fab lab at the University of Saint Joseph and co-founded the first fablab in Macau. He is also a member of several international collaborative experiments, such as Museomix and Hackmychurch. He has developed artistic projects for local and international exhibitions, integrating soundscapes, interactive technology, and digital fabrication. Prof. Helen Liu is an assistant professor at the University of Saint Joseph, Faculty of Health Sciences in Macau (FHS). She is currently the Research Coordinator for the FHS and the programme leader of the Prison Outreach Programme. She received her MSW from Rutgers University School of Social Work and her Ph.D. from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. She is a researcher-practitioner in social work and an associate affiliate of China Center for Social Policy Columbia University School of Social Work in New York City. She serves as an Academic Consultant in the committee of Family Education Group of the Macao Catholic Family Advisory Council.Her work has been supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau, Social Welfare Bureau, and Macao Foundation. Her research interest is primarily in the area of promoting children and youth health and well-being, with fostering family resilience and developmental outcomes in children and adolescents. She served as Principal Investigator (P.I.) on grants funded of the children, youth, and families. She was a P.I. on the the Needs of Different Stages of Marriage and Family Life Course in Macao, which was to explore the developmental tasks, adjustments to the different stages in their family life cycle so as to identify the social services in the marriage and family sector which may help in the transition from one stage to the other. Since 2022, Prof. Helen has studied the cyberbullying among Youth in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. She was a P.I. on the research project entitled “Youth cyberbullying: Understanding contextual paths to prevention and resilience”, exploring cyberbullying processes in youths, which mainly goes into psychological health and cyberbullying. She is currently a P.I. on the research project entitled” Digital Use Divide, Parenting Strategy, and Cyberbullying” to understand parents’ familiarity with the internet using digital technology affect children’s well-being and to examine how digital technology integrate into family life in meaningful ways and promote parental mediation and parenting strategy.

With a distinguished academic background, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biology (minor in Chemistry) from the State University of New York, College at Brockport, USA, and earned her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Education from the Inter-University Institute of Macau (IIUM), graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors and receiving the Macau Foundation Full Scholarship for her PhD studies.A dedicated educator with over two decades of experience, Dr. Tchiang began her career as a secondary teacher before transitioning into leadership roles, including training initiatives within Macao S.A.R. government departments. Since joining USJ in 2013, she has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses while leading research on education policy, teacher behavior and perceptions, professional training, parental involvement, and school collaboration. Dr Jacky Ho completed his studies in Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and Health from the University of Sydney (Australia), specialized in Gerontology, dementia and sleep science. He established the Department of Innovative Social Work and the Macau Healthy Lifestyle Research Centre, and was appointed as the Head of the department during his service at the City University of Macau. His research interest including 'ageing and health', 'hypertension and CVD', 'chronic diseases prevention and management', 'dementia and social support', 'physical activity', 'sleep physiology and pathology' and 'occupational health and risk'. His current study is focusing on the establishment of community-based telemedicine and chronic diseases management model in Macau and the Greater Bay Area. Jenny Oliveros Lao Phillips is the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). Prior to her current position, Prof. Phillips was appointed Registrar from 2016 to 2018, and Head of Public Relations Office from 2015 to 2018. She started working as a full-time academic at USJ in 2008. Before joining USJ, Prof. Phillips taught Business English at the Macao Polytechnic Institute and worked as a Cantonese/English interpreter and translator. She holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration awarded with the highest honor of summa cum laude from USJ in 2015. Prof. Phillips was born and educated in Macao. She holds a bachelor's degree in Tourism Business Management from the Institute for Tourism Studies, where she also received a higher diploma in Hotel Management and undertook specialized management training in public relations. She finished her MBA at USJ (IIUM) in 2003 with a thesis on customer satisfaction. Then, diverging from her management studies, she devoted her time in studying Literature and completed an MA dissertation on "The Ritual and the Sacred in Peter Shaffer's Theatre". In 2008, she was awarded a Master of Arts in English Studies (Literature Specialisation) with the highest grade of "Excellent" from the University of Macau. Prof. Phillips has over 20 years of teaching experience and has taught a wide range of courses, including Creativity, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Global Strategy, Service Operations, Managing Social Services, Creative Writing, and Literature. Her publications and research interests are in the areas of family business, social entrepreneurship, organizational behaviour and innovation, e-government, tourism and hospitality, empathy, and catharsis in tragedy and modern theatre. She has been a researcher at the Faculty of Human Science at the Catholic University of Portugal, working on a research project bridging cognitive science in empathy and literature studies in catharsis focusing on tragic theatre. She is also a writer and a poet featured at the Macau Literary Festival in 2018 and 2020. Her first children's novel, The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac, was published in 2006. Her poems, poetry translations, and articles have appeared in Poesia Sino-Occidental, Poetry.com, The Drunken Boat, Poetry Sky, and other publications and local press. Emeritus Professor Keith Morrison has worked in higher education for 40+ years, in the UK and South-East Asia, formerly at the University of Durham, UK and, since 2000, in Macau, where he has been Dean of a School of Education, Registrar, Director and Adviser for Institutional Development, and a university Vice‑rector. He is the author/co-author of 20 academic books on education, and for many years was the Co‑editor of the international peer‑reviewed journal Educational Research and Evaluation. He has conducted consultancies for governments, companies, organisations, and institutions in the UK, the Czech Republic, Malaysia, South Africa, Singapore, USA, Hong Kong, and Macau, and he has produced reports, papers, policy documents, and technical reports for government agencies and officers in several countries and educational institutions. He is a reviewer for funded research proposals for government grants agencies. He has been a reviewer for 25 international journals and for several leading international book publishers, has been a member of several Editorial Boards of peer-reviewed journals in education, and is a regular contributor to Macau Business. Dr. Chen holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA-D). She has worked with children with developmental disabilities in home and school settings, especially early intervention for young children with autism spectrum disorders, in mainland China, the USA, Singapore, and Macao SAR. Prof. Rochelle Ge (葛贇) is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Saint Joseph. She holds a Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore and was a Visiting Fellow at Yenching Institute, Harvard University. Additionally, she serves as an Adjunct Professor at the National Curriculum Development Base of South China Normal University. Working from a cross-disciplinary perspective, Prof. Ge integrates sociological approaches into her research and teaching on education and social development. Based in Macau, her current research interests include: Global Higher Education & Internationalization (student mobility and transnational education); Educational Leadership and Policy (governance, reform and institutional change in inclusive settings); Teacher Professionalization & Pedagogy (teacher identity, professional development, and innovative teaching practices); Curriculum Studies & Knowledge Systems (curriculum development, comparative curricula and 21st-century competencies). Stephan Rothlin

Dr. Stephan Rothlin SJ is director of the Macau Ricci Institute (www.riccimac.org) and Research Professor of the Faculty of Business and Law of the University of St. Joseph, Macau. He serves also as founder and CEO of Rothlin Consulting Limited, located in Beijing and in Hong Kong (www.rothlin.org). His teaching and research interests are focused on international business ethics and responsible entrepreneurship with a focus on China. He provides educational consulting services to encourage the practice of corporate social responsibility, and advocates amongst business communities and society at large the values of honesty, integrity, respect, transparency and responsibility as indispensable elements for excellence in business. Dr. Rothlin completed his academic studies in 1991 with a PhD in moral theology at the State University of Innsbruck, Austria, and is fluent in six languages, including Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, Italian, French, and German. From 1992 – 1998, he was the executive director of the Academic Centre, AKI, in Zürich and research fellow at the Institute of Empirical Research in Economics of the University of Zürich in Switzerland. From 1998-2012, he served as guest professor of international business ethics at The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies in Beijing. Since his relocation to Beijing in 1998, he has become a sought-after speaker on international business ethics, having taught at various business schools throughout Asia, including Renmin University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, the Central Party School in Beijing, Hong Kong University and INSEAD Business School, Singapore. From 2005 – 2013, he was secretary general for the Centre for International Business Ethics, Beijing, and chairman of the Association of International Business Ethics in Hong Kong.
Stephen Morgan

Stephen Morgan has been Rector of the University of Saint Joseph since 2020. Originally from Wales in the UK, he is an Associate Professor of Theology and Ecclesiastical History.After a career in finance in the City of London and Hong Kong, he spent fifteen years as the CFO/COO of a large not-for-profit in the UK. Returning to academic work in 2009, he read for a DPhil in Theology at the University of Oxford, where he was a Post Doctoral Research Associate between 2013 and 2015. He has been a member of the academic staff of the Maryvale Institute of Higher Religious Sciences since 2011. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, of the Royal Asiatic Society and of the Royal Society of Arts. In addition to his duties as Rector of USJ, he teaches 19th and 20th Century Church History and supervises doctoral students in Religious Studies and History.In 2022 he was elected Vice President of the International Federation of Catholic Universities, That same month he was also elected President of the Executive Secretariat of the Association of South East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities. He has been a member of the Executive Board of the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific since 2022, and First Vice President since 2024, and was a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Quarterdeck Lecture Series at the UK Defence Academy from 2016 until 2022.In October 2021, Catholic University of America Press published his “John Henry Newman and the Development of Doctrine”, which has been described as "The best work I've seen on the development of Newman's own thought on development of doctrine." Achieved a Degree in Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto, where I also completed a Master in Psychological Intervention with Children and Adolescents and completed my doctoral studies in Psychology. My major interest research is "Children’s Time Use" which is the topic of my doctoral dissertation completed in 2010. Since 1996 I have been doing psychological intervention with children and adolescents, as a clinical child psychologist, in the Cooperative O Fio de Ariana in Porto, Portugal. After five years of teaching Psychology and Communication Skills at the University of Porto, I am now teaching as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of St. Joseph, Macau. I am handling modules related to childhood and clinical psychology. Zhang Shuguang

Dr. Zhang Shuguang is Professor of Global Studies and Vice Rector for External Affairs and Institutional Development at the University of Saint Joseph. He also serves as member of Talent Development Committee and Creative Industry Committee of the Macau SAR Government. He owned a Ph.D. in international history from The Ohio University and Olin post-doctoral fellowship in international security at Yale University. His academic career in higher education has been truly international: he taught for 16 years at the University of Maryland (USA) and worked respectively as a Research Fellow at the Nobel Peace Institute of Norway, a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as a Distinguished “Changjiang” Professor and Vice President at Shanghai International Studies University of China. Before joining USJ, he was Senior Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at Macau University of Science and Technology (2011-2015) and Rector of City University of Macau (2015-2020).

Ana Maria Pires Correia is Associate Professor and Director of the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education. Ana Correia developed her career as a schoolteacher in Portugal and Macau before joining the University of Saint Joseph (formerly Inter-University Institute of Macau). She holds a PhD in Education, summa cum laude, from the Inter-University Institute of Macau-Catholic University of Portugal (awarded 2008), a Master of Education, a Teacher Certificate from the Macau Youth and Education Bureau and a Licentiate in Philosophy from the University of Lisbon.Ana Correia joined the USJ in 2010 and in 2014 was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Psychology and Education. In 2016 was promoted to Associate Professor and in April 2017 was appointed Dean of the newly created School of Education. Ana Correia was a key contributor to the design and development of the USJ Bachelor of Education and led the creation of other educational programmes such as the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education and the Master of Education. She is currently the module leader for the following programmes: Qualitative Research Methods (PhD programme), Curriculum Design and Development (MEd programme), Research Methods in Education (MEd programme) and Classroom Organisation and Management (BED).Her research interests range from educational leadership, gender studies in education, inclusive education, classroom management, culturally responsive teaching and philosophical inquiry. Elisa Monteiro

Elisa Monteiro was born in Mozambique but grew up in South Africa where she completed her primary and secondary education. She received her PhD in Education here at USJ. She teaches various modules in the undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes and supervises in-service and pre-service teachers during their teaching practice at placement schools. Teaching areas include assessment of learning, educational theories, differentiated instruction, and effective teaching and strategies to enhance student learning. She has also created and taught a variety of English language programmes for kindergarten through twelfth grade within schools and language centres and has delivered several teacher-training courses in the areas of instructional pedagogy and assessment. She supervises Master's and PhD students within the School of Education. Elisa is very interested in developing and articulating teachers' professional knowledge and skills. Her research interests cover a range of topics in curriculum planning, pedagogy, instructional strategies, assessment, and inclusive education.
Francisco Vizeu Pinheiro

(樊飛豪) Francisco V. Pinheiro, PhD, is Associate Professor Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Architecture and Design at University of St. Joseph in Macau, and Visiting Professor in Jiangnam University (江南大学), in Mainland China.in 2006 received is doctorate (phD) on Engineering in Architecture and Building Engineering at the Technological Institute of Tokyo, Japan (東京工業大学). 2017 received a Master of Environmental Sciences and Management at the Institute of Science and Environment, University of Saint Joseph, Macau-China. In 1984 received his Licentiate in architecture from the University of Lisbon, Portugal. His work involves the urban rehabilitation projects in Macau historical centre. He work for several years in private and different government institutions related with city planing like, for example IAM. Several of the projects were recognised and listed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage. His research is to study the demographic and social impact of public housing in an ageing society, the green urbanism synergies with revitalizations, and the tourism in Macau. The core of his research is to provide an insight to the realm where the values of our local culture were replaced by massive cooperative trends and seemed to vanish in a tsunami of globalization. Citizens feel like robots and even lost in the city. Is heritage a relic of our past, or a reflection of our present identity, or a by-product of corporations? In a globalized world, the search for preserving cultural and identical factors, (i.e. our cultural DNA, memories, cultural patterns, spirits of places and traditions), are critical for future generations. He challenges the concept that contemporary style intervention and modern narratives on heritage facilities represent “authentic” narratives of preservation. The intromission of different architectural languages on the concept and work of other author’s represent an adulteration of originality as well copyright infringement. He links “Authenticity” concepts with the word and work of “Author”. Authenticity is in many cases embodies by the local communities traditions, the authors, that transmitted from generation to generation, in a process often compared with “re-incarnation” assuming in reality the original idea and concepts. He advocates the urban rehabilitation and architectural conservation as important parts in urban planning and city development, in an Holistic and Sustainable planning, heritage is not and hindrance but a complement of a balanced urban development. He sees the need to find new ways to protect local Asian traditions and to break the strong colonial and intellectual dependence of the western culture, creating new bridges for mutual understanding and dialogue.
Ho Fuk Chuen

Fuk-chuen Ho, PhD, has been the programme coordinator of courses for teachers of students with special educational needs for more than 20 years. He was assistant professor in the Department of Special Education and Counselling at the Education University of Hong Kong and associate professor in the School of Arts and Humanities at Tung Wah College. He has been teaching in the areas of special/inclusive education in the university for over 30 years and has extensive experiences in managing teacher education programmes. His scholarly work has largely contributed to students with dyslexia and autism spectrum disorder and to their teachers. His research has been published in quality academic journals, including Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Teacher and Teaching Education, Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, Educational Psychology, British Journal of Special Education and Journal of Learning Disabilities.
Kiiko Ikegami

Dr Kiiko Ikegami is a faculty member at Monash University and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). She worked full-time at USJ from 2019 to 2023 and continues to contribute as an adjunct professor. She holds a PhD from Monash University, Australia, an MEd in Special Educational Needs from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, and a BEd from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. Kiiko has extensive teaching and research experience across Australian and international contexts. Her primary research focuses on quality education, with additional interests in the Soka education model and educators’ knowledge, beliefs, and practice. With a strong background in education, Kiiko specialises in the theoretical foundations of education, curriculum and assessment studies, family-school partnerships, and inclusive education. She is also actively involved in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Ágata Alveirinho Dias

Ágata Dias holds a PhD in Geology, specializing in Mineralogy, Crystallography, and Metallogeny, as well as an MSc in Dynamic Geology. Her scientific interests encompass mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and marine geology, with a specific focus on deep-sea hydrothermal systems and ore deposits. Since 1996, she has actively participated in research projects related to deep-sea exploration and the study of mineralogy, geochemistry, and ore-forming minerals. Upon joining the ISE, she has also engaged in environmental projects.In addition to her research activities, Ágata Dias has collaborated with various universities and research institutions worldwide. These include IFREMER in Brest, France; ETH in Zurich, Switzerland; NOC in Southampton, UK; the University of Bergen in Norway; FCUL in Lisbon, Portugal; GIGCAS and the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) in China, specifically the SIO (South China Sea Institute of Oceanology) and SIO (State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology). She has also participated in several scientific cruises.
