From 5 to 9 June 2019, AAUSJ held the 2019 AAUSJ Chinese Cultural Exchange Tour in Hangzhou

The Alumni Association of the University of Saint Joseph (AAUSJ) successfully organised the 2019 edition of the AAUSJ Chinese Cultural Exchange Tour. This year, the destination was Hangzhou, and the trip took place from June 5th to 9th. The tour was led by the Rector of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell; the President and Vice-President of AAUSJ’s General Assembly, Mr. William Un and Mr. Benjamin Yue, respectively, and the Chairperson of AAUSJ’s Executive Committee, Ms. Joyce Tang. The tour was culturally and technologically enriching.

Ms. Cen Jiayi, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region, accompanied the delegation and provided guidance throughout the 5-day tour.

The delegation was welcomed by Mr. Wang Zhenbin, Director of the Office of Cooperation and Exchange with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education and had the valuable opportunity to hold a meeting with Prof. Can Huang, Assistant to the Dean of the School of Management and Prof. Liu Jingqing, Vice Director of Industrial Technology Research Institute during a visit to the Zhejiang University. During the meetings, all parties expressed their desires to explore opportunities for further exchanges and cooperations.

Hangzhou, one of the most scenic cities of China, is the home of the e-Commerce giant Alibaba and is also well-known as an emerging technology hub. The delegation took this special opportunity to visit the headquarters of the Alibaba Group, the Hangzhou Future Science City, the China Artificial Intelligence Town and the Dream Village. Naturally, the Chinese Cultural Exchange Tour would not be complete without the chance to enjoy the West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and other exquisite cultural sites. The visits and tours not only enriched the delegation’s knowledge of history, but also strengthened the understanding of China’s advanced technological developments.

The delegation had a total of 29 delegates, including AAUSJ Vice-Chairpersons, Mr. Addy Chan and Mr. Kensho Nagata, Balaam; USJ Vice-Rector, Prof. Álvaro Barbosa; USJ Acting Vice-Rector, Prof. Rochelle Ge; USJ Faculty representatives, Prof. Vítor Teixeira (Faculty of Social Sciences), Prof. Karen Tagulao (Insitute of Science and Environment), and Prof. Susannah Sun (School of Education); Director of the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA), Ms. Teresa Loong; colleagues from the OSAA and Public and International Relations Office; USJ Students’ Association Vice-President and Chairperson, Mr. Marco Ao Ieong and Mr. Gary Lao, respectively; alumni and students.
