On 8 November 2019, the Department of Portuguese Studies of the Faculty of Humanities is organising a public lecture titled “The Joy of Translating” by Dr. Richard Zenith at the Don Bosco Auditorium, Ilha Verde Campus.

About the Talk

Drawing from his extensive experience as a freelance translator from Portuguese into English, Richard Zenith will talk about the rewards and challenges of the profession, offering practical advice on the art of translating and a few tips for pursuing a career.

About the Speaker

Prof. Richard Zenith is an American-Portuguese writer and translator and the 2012 winner of the Pessoa Prize. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1979 and his experience includes English translations of poetry, having extensively written about Pessoa’s poetry and prose. He has also translated works by Antero de Quental, Sophia de Mello Breyner, Nuno Júdice, António Lobo Antunes, and Luís de Camões, among others. Additionally, he organised, with Carlos Felipe Moisés, the exhibition “Fernando Pessoa, Plural como o Universo”, dedicated to Pessoa’s life and heteronyms. The exhibition was showcased at Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Foundation (Portugal), São Paulo’s Museum of Portuguese Language (Brazil) and Rio de Janeiro’s Centro Cultural Correios (Brazil).
