Coordinator's Message

The fields of architecture and design contain some of the greatest potential for the future cultural and economic growth of Macau. Adjacent to the manufacturing zones of South China, and host to incredible quantities of new construction, Macau is in an ideal position to develop the intellectual and creative capital for radically new types of architecture and design. South China has developed into a world-class manufacturing centre.

While this has been based on foreign OEM (original equipment manufacturing) products, there is now a rapid shift toward ODM (original design manufacturing). For product designers, there are incredible opportunities to create and commercialize innovative product designs for the domestic and international markets. Similarly, the constant reclamation of new land in Macau and the surrounding areas provides unprecedented opportunities for architects to conceive new types of buildings and, indeed, new types of cities.

Beyond instructing students in the history of the architecture and design, and the associated technical skills, the university provides space and time for reflection and experimentation – a platform from which to postulate alternatives, to develop unprecedented solutions to current problems, and responses to as-yet unknown ones. Addressing the full spectrum of aesthetic, technological, urban, economic, environmental, social, theoretical, and historical issues, the USJ architecture and design programmes emphasize ethics as well as expertise, requiring students to constantly evaluate the consequences of their work on the built environment and the natural world. Our graduates are good designers, but also good citizens.
