“History and Heritage” can be defined as an area of ​​interdisciplinary studies. It is grounded on research and teaching in the fields of History, History of Art and Heritage Sciences and it also regards the involvement in scientific projects in these areas of knowledge and its cultural dissemination in Macau. The context of Macau territory, inserted in the Pearl River Delta Region, and its linkages to the Southeast Asia, provide Macau and the study of its history and heritage a whole wide field of study and research, boosted by its historical lever in China and the connection between the Far East and the West. This historical connection between the two regions goes beyond the economic bond among them, especially in the last decades.

History, Culture, Heritage and Identity are the building blocks in which we can ground the study and investigation of this Program, driven by the artistic and heritage importance of the City of Macau, declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2005. The conservation, study and management of the natural heritage of Macau can then be considered as the features of expertise to develop in future, in which this USJ program intends to position itself, as a player and as a key partner in the community in the pursuit of this mission, largely related to one of the stronger areas of economic activity in Macau: Tourism. Training professionals and researchers, creating and encouraging critical mass in the area of management, study, research and conservation of heritage is currently an underpinning investment of USJ.

Typical Career Options

A MA degree in History and Heritage at USJ offers multiple career possibilities, not only in the context of Macao but also internationally. In addition to teaching and research in the area of History and Heritage, this degree allows working as technician or manager in the tourist industry, information sciences (libraries and archives), museums and collections as well as in communication and the cultural and publishing fields. This course can also be the basis for further specializations in conservation and restoration of heritage which very important in the context of Macao and Southeast Asia.
