MIT student, Daniel Filipe Farinha won FDCT research award
Daniel Filipe Farinha, graduate of Master of Information Technology, USJ, has won the award, Prémio de Investigação Científica e Desenvolvimento Tecnológico para Pós-Graduados (研究生科技研發獎), from FDCT. This award is held every two years and the latest result was announced in September, 2016. Daniel’s research thesis is titled “GROKYA: A PRIVACY-FRIENDLY FRAMEWORK FOR UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING”.
“The work was motivated by the significant threat to personal privacy posed by increasingly connected personal and “smart” home devices, in what is called the Internet-of-Things (IoT), in conjunction with the growing trend for enterprises to collect and process large amounts of consumer data, also known as Big Data analytics.
The thesis proposes a solution in the form of a new framework that gives consumers more control, by providing them with the personal infrastructure to collect, control and process their own data, whilst also allowing enterprises and third-parties to collaborate with the consumer infrastructure to extract mutual value, including monetisation of the data, without infringing on personal privacy.”
According to Daniel, he is planning to continue working on this project as part of his PhD research at USJ.
